What should i do about fine verm?

Im making 12 PF jars and unfortunalty i could only get this really fine verm... my question is if in the recipe for PF cakes if your making 12 jars it calls for 8 cups of verm to 3 cups of brf to 3 cups of water... and if they are using coarser verm 8 cups of it is a lot freaking less then 8 cups of my fine verm so should i decrease the amount of verm?? thanks

ok,
a cup full of course verm.....takes up the space of a cup
a cup full of fine verm.......takes up the space of a cup
so, when u fill your pf jars up with the mixed up substrate.....will the finer verm somehow take up more space?...........nope.
its like the question : Which is heavier, a tonne of gold, or a tonne of feathers.
the only diffrence u will face using fine grade verm instead of course is that it holds more water....if u can, split your jars into a few groups, with each group getting a slightly diffrent ammount of water to the others.
remember to mark them....this way u will know for future grows what ammount of water works best.

I would measure out 12 jars worth of verm, use the same amount of flour, and enough water to get the right moisture content. Just a thought.

what your saying makes since but think about it this way... coarse verm is much bigger but much much less dense then finelly chopped almost powdery verm therefor when u take a cup of it you are phsyically taking the same measured size (a cup) but a much less dense portion then u are taking with the middle to coarse verm.. so the problem is if i follow those guidelines i will be using a much less brf to verm ratio...

i mean think about it fine verm is really just chopped up coarse verm so a cup of fine verm is really like 3 cups of coarse verm.. so if coarse verm was used it would be an 8:3 ration for verm to brf but with fine its more like an 8:1 ratio

Well my friend, looks like you have some algebra to do. I guess your only choice is to figure out the ratios and adjust accordingly. Good luck on your endeavor.

lol........i dont understand what you are wanting to hear P.
that fact of the matter is:
the right ammount of BRF is already in the jars
you cannot reduce the ammount of verm going in because then you wouldnt get a full jar of substrate.
now.....since the verms only purpose is to hold water and lighten the mix up....then the only possible solution is to experiment with the ammount of water the verm is holding.
so, split your jars up into groups of 2 or 3.....each group getting a slightly altered ammount of water.

many places sell vermiculite.
try your local garden centres.....and failing that, most of the shroomery sponsers sell bags of verm.

what you are saying is simply not true because i have already made abatch of jars using this verm and mixed the exact amount to make 12 jars outlined in the PF method and i was left with ALOT of extra substrate...

Ok, just dump a load of verm into a big pan...........pour in a shitload of water....swish it around a bit.........drain the excess water off.....then measure out your ammounts out of that.
it will be very sticky and nasty....but hey, thats life.

Why wouild it be sticky and nasty?
Follow the http://www.fungifun.org/pf/pf_en.htm and you will allways get a perfect substrate, regardles of the vermiculite you use.
