Larvae on wild cubensis?
    #10908569 - 08/21/09 10:46 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I noted doing a spore print that there was a small pile of what looks like some sort of larvae.  I brushed them in the toilet, but there are a few in the upper right corner of the print photos.  What are these?  Did they come from the field, or later while drying on my desk?  Is this a common contamination problem?

I've seen those before.  I can't identify them exactly-
\

certain flies like to lay eggs in the gills of outdoor mushrooms.  eggs hatch into little maggots that eat the mushroom tissue.  when you printed them the mushrooms dried out a bit and the maggots crawled out looking for a new moist place to live.

I've also seen them before. One time I picked some shrooms and they were in one of them and a friend of mine insisted that I didn't throw out that shroom. He ate it...

Wild mushrooms often get chewed on by bugs and animals. Also, as stated above, flies will lay their eggs in mature fruits and the larvae will consume them.

I pulled about a half ounce from an outdoor patch a few days ago. A few of the fruits were chewed on - they were fine after eight hours in the food dehydrator.
