Oyster Shells?

Can you use crushed oyster shells instead of hydrated lime or are the shells just used as a ph buffer?

Sorry to be a fellow newbie, and not an expert answering this, but i know how frustrating it is to get no responses, so...

peat is very acidic, i.e. pH 3-4, so you can bring it back to neutral for a good casing with any alkaline substance, and preferably one that retains the ability to soak up spare protons (H+ ions, what makes an acid an acid) and so acts over a long period. It seems from my reading that oyster shells alone can do the job, but you're even better off with a 'quick-acting' alkiliniser like lime or even pure powdered Calcium Carbonate as well. If you can get hold of some pH testing strips, or litmus paper, you'd do well - try to keep the pH between 6.5 and 8 to avoid problems, ie. fairly neutral.

If you can't get either, you can case with pure vermiculite, or with coco coir (sold in pet shops) with the same effect.

Supposedly the crushed oyster shells will provide the neccisary adjustments to the ph, however, 50/50+ tek still calls for a bit of lime though I think way too damn much...

My id uses both...

Yes oyster shell is perfect for buffering the ph of your casing.
I always make a mixture of coco coir, vermiculite and oyster shell.
