1 pt brf jar question.
    #10911312 - 08/22/09 11:30 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Hey ya'll i was wondering if it was normal for growth to remain the same for almost 2 days in 1 pint brf jars. They are about 5 1/2 days old and they are all around 25% colonized. it appears as if they have shown no sign of growth in them recently.

More often than not, the mycelium is growing INTO the jar. That makes it seem as though there is little or no growth. Be patient...

Sounds like you just need to be patient.........im no expert but problems you could be having are:

1.lack of GE...are your lids covered with foil instead of micropore tape? do you have any GE at all....?

2. You packed down the jars (I did this my first cakes) too much and the mycelium is having a hard time working through the substrate...

3. Mycelium will halt growth if it runs into contams....any signs of non normal lookin colors in your jars?

4. pints take forever to colonize for me....most people use halfpints....I have had great success with 4oz jars...

all of that said....im no expert...so...

pints are bad for PF jars, they take forever to colonize

also 5 1/2 days is nothing, have some patience

to answer your question...
1. they are only cover in 2 layers of foil one with holes in it follwed by another covering that layer just like the original pf tek vid on youtube.
2.im sure that i didn't pack down the jars i took extra precaution on that step and only shook the jars to level the substrate
3.no there is no unusual colors besides black at the innoc. points but the only reason is because im using a new moon b+ syringe and thats normal, no green or anything along those lines.
i saw good growth in these guys by day 3 so im guessing its growing inward like brandnewbie said.

Mostly sounds like ya just need to be patient then

....However I would still ditch the foil for some micropore tape...3$ at CVS...better yet for GE if you have a dry verm layer you dont even need anything at all....I have done some side by sides recently and noticed removing foil does help...

just my 2 pennies.....

There is a muuuuch better video set on youtube for the pftek.  The original tek was great and all, but years of advancements by people like RogerRabbit have refined the tek quite a bit.  Here's part 1, the rest of the parts won't be hard to find at all
