Parents in the Dark about Desert Raves

KRQE.com
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Raves are all the rage this summer although a Bernalillo County gang detective believes parents would be shocked by their kids' behavior at these parties in the desert.
BCSO Gang Detective Nathan Lerner says parents would be shocked by their kids' behavior.
Earlier this summer Detective Nathan Lerner, with the approval of Valencia County investigators, took a video camera to a rave to document what was going on. He was in uniform and told kids where he worked.
On the video, one can see girls scantily dressed and everyone dancing to music. Glow sticks and other lights are flickering.
"We did see a lot of younger kids showing the signs of being high on the drug MDMA, which is ecstasy ," Lerner told KRQE News 13.
A mother who didn't want her identity revealed said she went with her 16-year-old daughter to a rave on the Pajarito Mesa in southwest Bernalillo County.
"We were told it was kids getting together dancing having a good time," she said. "It was a lot more.
"It was trance music ; it was alcohol, drugs. Little girls, probably around12 years old all the way up to maybe in their 20s even walking around with nothing but panties and bras on."
The mother also said she was offered alcohol and Ecstasy and saw the pills passed around. The girls with only a small amount of clothing were dry fornicating, she added.
There were a couple hundred people at the rave.
Lerner took News 13 to a patch of land on the Pajarito Mesa where the landowner said his nephew had a rave a couple of weeks ago.
There were water bottles and glow sticks littering the ground. Lerner said about 100 people were there but didn't pay attention to what they were doing.
A stage for the DJ was constructed and a disco ball hangs from a pole.
Raves are not hard to find. There are flyers and information on the Web, and deputies said you get a phone number to get directions.
The Albuquerque mother says the evidence is not hard to find that your kids are attending raves. For one they wear pacifiers, she said.
According to deputies the pacifiers stop kids from grinding their teeth, which is a side effect of Ecstasy.
The kids also like to wear colorful beads as bracelets.
Investigators said organized raves are much more different than outdoor raves. When they're held at clubs, they're usually in a controlled environment.
Still police raided Club 7 in downtown Albuquerque last summer during a rave. Officers said kids were high and partially dressed.
Detectives said there are some clues that your kid could be going to raves. Those include glow sticks, vapor rub, pacifiers, cheap plastic beads and bandanas or other masks.
They also suggested parents talk to their children about the dangers of the consequences of drugs and alcohol at these parties.

No matter how you spin this story and how bad they want it to sound, it all boils down to one thing.
To be at a rave in the middle of the desert partying with hundreds of people, is one of the coolest things to do in the world.

Im sure they'd rather have their 16 year old daughters go out drinking, not know how much to drink and overdose, losing all their memory and risk being raped or dying.
This is the product of a lack of honest talk about drugs.

I feel that this is everything in life Crazy opportunities and then little kids start going or the drugs get a little harder and then people feel like a line needs to be drawn because we all care about something or someone too much. I don't know if it's good or bad but it seems like a cycle

Desert raves are nothing compared to Burning Man... The best part is you don't see those 12 year old pantie bra wearin rave hos grinding up on random strangers with a pacifier in their mouth and the eyes rolled back into the head...
Enjoy the honeymoon though, the last rave I went to was in March.

Yeah you're right. Raves are a lot safer (if you arent a fucking retard going overboard with drugs) than going to the city.
Although in NSW, our rave scene has gone to shit. Half the people that go dress as chavs(they call themselves lads) to steal, fight and generally just be a fucknut.

Change the the name, the music, change (some of) the drugs and it's the same thing we've seen and done since the 60's, 70's and so on beginning of time and anyone surprised by this, parent or not, is a retard.

Yeah, the rave scene has gotten a lot bigger here in Albuquerque the past few years, or maybe I just started to notice it. Either way, I love those raves!! The whole scene started downtown in the fucking clubs, and god damn is that shit nasty. After a few raids, and the closing of Club 7, people started thinking about our wonderful deserts! Much better Unfortunately, I wish it were as cool as it sounds. These raves happen too often, I have a few good friends that I feel have fallen too much into the scene. They are cool, MDMA is fun, lights and random fucks are nice, but not every damn week. Oh well, since these things have gotten the publicity of the news our lovely neighborhood police will have to do some thing about it. They were pretty cool about the desert raves, if they even bothered to bust them but I suspect they will have a lot more pressure to act in a more stern manor. Also, the trash is worse than it sounds, it's like a god damn dump.

I've been to a A LOT of raves being a product on the 80's and 90's. I have taken a lot of MDMA and MDA because of friends who were REALL into raves and science, and not once have I seen someone pass out/be in any real danger from raving, drinking a little water, and be very high on those two awesome drugs.
Secondly I SERIOUSLY DOUBT there are TWELVE YEAR OLDS at raves. First of all they don't really think 7th graders are hanging out with the same group of college kids- upperclassman in high school at private, slutty, drug up raves. It just doesn't happen like that. How is it that 12 year olds always end up at these crazy evil drug dance parties, but never anywhere else involving drugs and alcohol with kids substantially older than them. Lastly, how is wearing slutty clothes and dancing ANY different than what happens at basically ANY club and many bars that young people go to. How is that any different than any party or kick it that young people go to on the weekend while in high school. How is a rave ANY different from any other form of entertainment besides the fact that the music is different and MDMA happens to be the drug associated with this type of dance party: compared to alcohol and marijuana at house parties, cocaine at clubs and upper middle class parties, and psychedelics at the old 60's house parties.
I am so sick of this bullshit and how these fucking asshole "journalists" have the balls to try to create scary news when they are doing the EXACT same thing all the time. The difference is that their activity is not labeled as a 'rave'.

I doubt the cops will do much about it, we have had a few kids die from ODs at parties within the last few years and they still have yet to be stopped. Its up to the scene to change, I was in the rave scene when bright color phat pants, a t-shirt and visors were still the fashionable way to dress. When there was still a Dance Safe... Its all changed way too much in the last 6 years.
Its true though, there are very very very underage girls at parties, they even try to lie to you about there age half of the time, one of the reasons I quit going to raves was I slept with this girl who I thought was 18 and a month later I found out she was 14 by one of her friends who was promoting with me. Even though I used to think raves should have no age limits, you go to a 18+ rave and there are no kandi kids! Because they are mostly all underage.
Yes the media does twist a lot of shit around, but these 12-17 year old girls are at raves in nothing but their panties and their bras attempting to be Go Gos rolled out of their mind, munching their faces and don't know how to control themselves, whats right, whats wrong.
I love the rave culture, its what brought me up, it gave me a job for a while, but sooner or later its time to grow up and go to where all the other jaded ravers go... BURNING MAN!
