Straw vs Cardboard
    #1090602 - 11/27/02 11:24 AM (14 years, 12 days ago)

I doubt this is particularly advanced, and I know its been tried before. Basically I made up 2 trays from the same batch of cakes. One with 2.5 cakes crumbled in with straw, the other with 2.5 cakes mixed with shredded corrugated card. Both grown and dried in the same conditions. As you can see in the pic the amount of bluing on the cardboard batch was way more than straw (the bottom shrooms are from cardboard). From what I've read cubies don't make much use of card so I'm curious as to why they went so much bluer than I'd normally expect. Any theories?
First flush yield from it was a not bad 18g dry.

i assume the cardboard has less nutrients for the shroom and causes the mushie to grow stressed..

straw has more nutrients and permit the mush to grow healthier and without as much stress/difficulty!

I really have no clue, but that would be my guess!!

Also, the cardboard probably doesn't have the nutrients to produce psilocybin, so the blue was probably due to the alkaloids being primarily psilocin. It is thought that the blueing occurs due to oxidation of psilocin.

it isn't thought, it's known. that's why they call chemistry a science...

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

If you could please point me in the direction of any studies that proved this or give me any links I would very much appriciate it. I would be very interested in reading them.

Thank you.
