has anyone seen this b&w movie from japan?
the sequel tetsuo 2 - body hammer is a reworking of the original but in color and a slightly different story.
the director, shinya tsukamoto, has a penchance for violence and weirdness. none of his films are very comfortable but are all fascinating. his more recent movies are - tokyo fist, bullet ballet and gemini. gemini wasn't so violent as it was disturbing. every single character in that movie had their eyebrows shaved off, it leaves them partly disfigured, partly expressionless.

I saw a brief clip of that movie in a class that Im taking. Very disturbing. Good representation of how machines are invading our lives though.

A truly bizarre movie. If you're into industrial music you'll probably love it if only for that.

I saw Tetsuo for the first time in a movie teether. My girlfriend left after 5 minutes. Tsukamoto personally came to present Tetsuo II in a film festival. He went on the stage, took out a small camera (Japanese turist style) and took few pictures of the public! Then he said: "When I drove here from the airport I saw the moon and the stars in the sky. You can never see that in Tokyo!" and left. Bizarre!

its true at least for the stars. tokyo never gets dark. mr tsukamoto probably took the pix to prove to his friends and family that he really does have a following. he is not well known here.
btw - i visited slovenia a few years ago, had some wild fast rides thru the hills, got caught speeding but they let me off cos i didn't have enough money to pay the fine, good food, good parties. very nice country!

Is he a Japanese Fellini?
maybe, in the context, tsukamoto did for the 90's what fellini did for the 60's. but not in terms of style or attitude. not much tenderness or joy with shinya. one salaryman gets injected by an unknown hand whilst on the train, soon he is looking like the guy in the b&w pic in the 1st post. gotta admit, i much prefer pasolini to federico......hehehe 120 days of sodom i haven't been able to stomach the evening news for years, here in japan they love to zoom in on the bloodstains and chunks of gore.

Kurosawa is unbeatable but Tetsuo might be the best known modern Japanese movie around here. I can imagine that he's not popular there, I have a feeling that there is no place for technophobia in Japan. Do you know any other interesting Japanese movies and cartoons? I'm planning to make a Japanese movie weekend in a local youth center.

this link is for an article on some of the latest manga movies http://www.metropolis.co.jp/tokyo/recent/feature.asp
also the new horror movie from hollywood - the ring - is a remake of a japanese movie of the same name. there also exists 'the ring 2', so it may be interesting to screen that before hollywood gets stuck into it. if its gonna be a family affair, try 'shall we dance?' or 'the yamada's', both are fairly whimsical looks at modern japanese lifestyles and families. the yamada's is animated. they were reasonably successful movies here. and tsukamoto's 'gemini' came out on dvd a year ago. it's weirdness is much more subtle than tetsuo so it is more palatable to a wider audience.

jesus that's one seriously fucked up movie. the first time i saw it i watched akira directly after. quite an experience. you can really see the literary similarities. i found the sequel to make more sense plot-wise, but either because of or in spite of that i didn't like it as much as the original. the music in wonderful, i've looked everywhere for the soundtrack but it seems to only be an import, and so like $25. amazing soundtrack, and amazing stop-motion animation. -m
