My understanding of BULK w/ horse manure.
    #10888970 -

The last week or so I have been researching grains and bulk growing. I compiled the following with posts from shroomery and RR's Let's Grow Mushrooms DVD. Now, I consider this near final and was wondering if anyone seen anything wrong with it or anything they could add.
The times are just estimates, as I have never done them before in my life.

Without further adue here is what I got

Bulk Grain Growing

I.    Preparing Rye Grain
II.  Innoculating the Jars
III.  Preparing the Substrate
IV.  Layer Spawn with Substrate
V.    Prepare Casing
VI.  Apply the Casing
VII.  Fruit
VIII. Note
s

I.  Preparing Rye Grain - Overnight
Use 1 cup of grain for each quart jar you're making.
Rinse rye until water pours out clean.
Soak grains with 1 TBSP gypsum for 12-24 hours.
Boil for 10 minutes.
Strain at full boil. Shake to steam dry grains.
To test grains, place them on TP for 30s. It should be dry.
Load jars 3/4 full.
Cover top of jar with 2 layers of Tyvek and place cover on.
Place foil over top and PC for 90mins and cool over night.

II. Innoculating the Jars - 3 weeks
Sanitize the whole area.
Take jars from PC right into glovebox.
Sanitize gloves and needle outside with alcohol.
Sterilize needle with flame outside of the glovebox.
Inject 4 holes against glass.
Resterilize needle between jars.
Let jars colonize 1/3 of the way then shake.
When jars are 100% colonized create the spawned substrate.

III.  Preparing the Substrate - 6 hours
Crush manure up then add 1:10 verm and 1:20 gypsum.
Mix really well and add water till field capacity.
Ideal pH of a substrate is 5.5 to 6.5
Load the jars up and pasturize them.
Submerge jars 3/4 of the way in water and heat 140f-160f.
Maintain internal temp for 60 minutes.
Cool till room temperature.

IV. Layer Spawn with Substrate 4:1 - 1 week
Put a layer of substrate then spawn and shake around to mix.
Layer until 4"-5" high.
Cover with foil and poke holes for gas exchange.
Let substrate sit till until 100% colonization.

V. Prepare Casing - 6 hours
Mix 10pt Peatmoss, 1pt Calc Carb, 1pt Gypsum add water.
Mix 10pt Verm and add water.
Mix the 2 together until they're field capacity
After 1 hour, squeeze some water out and pH test it.
Optimal pH is 7.5 but 6.5 - 8 are is an acceptable range.
Submerge jars 3/4 of the way in water and heat 140f-160f.
Maintain internal temp for 60 minutes.
Cool till room temperature.

VI. Apply the Casing - 1 week
Casing can be applied up to 1 inch.
Cover with foil and wait till 20% is colonized
Place in fruiting chamber

VII.  Fruit - 2 weeks
Humidity must be above 90%.
Keep temps 70f-75f.

VIII. Notes
Horse manure is 7.2 pH without anything added.
For bulk 3:1:1 Substrate:Spawn:Casing

Thanks in advanced for anything posted in response to my notes.

Looks like it covers everything pretty well.

Make sure you get good feild aged manure. Not green stuff. shouldnt smell, should smell like grass/hey. If it smells of ammonie its not ready.

You dont need a casing layer you can skip that part.

thanks for the positive and fast reply.

I got a horse manure connec that says they add lime to it. I need to buy some PH strips and test it but I am sure even if the prepared hpoo isnt a good PH they would let me pick up some dry nuggs in the field.

Also, why don't I need a casing layer? When would I need one?

Agreed,

HOWEVER, My next Grow I am pasteurizing a few handfuls of peat BESIDE my bulk sub.

I plan to spread it out over the top on my bulk sub to even out the surface area a little better.

I figure it will colonize right along with the sub.

What kind of tyvek are you using? If you're using postal envelope tyvek than two layers are used, but with tyvek from a suit or sleeves you can go with a single layer.

Make sure to shake the grains multiple times while they're drying....having a couple colanders makes this task MUCH easier, sometimes you can find small ones at the dollar store.  I have to use about 7 1/2-8 cups of rye to fill 7 quart jars.

:hussein: I wouldn't go up to 1" on the casing layer.  You can skip this step for your first project(s) if you want and still get great results, but if you want the extra step for your first bulk project than by all means, go for it. Many people get better results with utilizing a casing layer, myself incuded, though i don't use them often.

I try to shake colonizing jars at closer to 20-25%.  I think you'll find faster colonization times with shaking a bit earlier than an estimated 33%.

And don't let anyone discourage you from doing bulk for a first project.  Cubensis are not that difficult and i think all the talk about NEEDING to start with cakes (which no T.C. or Mod says, some just advise that route) is bull crap.  :shineon: ~Pixie~

Thanks for the encouragment Pixie.

This is going to be my second time with cubensis. I am currently doing PFTek with Penis Envy. Theyre about 2 weeks in with no signs of contams. Out of 12 jars one didn't colonize and at the 2 week period started growing cobweb. I dislike BRF cakes, I don't like the consistancy of them. The inability to tell if theyre the correct moisture or whats going on inside, low visibility.

I will be using cuttings from a tyvek suit thanks for that!
I will skip the casing layer for the first attempt. Would you recommend 1/2" ?
I will shake when 1/4 is colonized.

Also the question I have is if I am using quart jars for grain how is my needle supposed to reach the grain? I had problems with needle length in my half pint jars, It's only about 2" long.

I am really excited to try new strains out my first is PE and my next one is Brazil then South American
This is a very cool hobby. Thank you guys for the responsed thus far.

I guess mine are about 1/2".  3/4" or less is what you want with cubensis.

The needle doesn't need to reach the grain.  1cc, or even less, in a single inoculation point in a quart jar is fine.  Just slowly squirt it in there, no need to shake after inoculation.

lol, pf cakes are awesome and so easy to tell if they are at the correct moisture content.

its all in the verm. Hydrate it with a bit less than the tek recomends, pick it up and squeeze. add more if its too dry, add more verm if its too wet. simple.

I make them slightly on the dry side.

i very much doubt you had cobweb, mycelium can sometimes look thin and almost grey because you can see the substate through it.

Thanks for the BRF tips. I didn't know about squeezing them until after I made them. I reread my post and I didn't mean to knock PFtek like that when it is my ignorance that is the problem. So yeah thumbs up for PFtek!

Also, I am 100% sure it was a contam. Not sure if it was cobweb but sure it was a contam. I actually made 12 jars with BRF mix and let them sit out without pressure cooking them and they all got this grey/white mold that smelled very funny. The jar in question went from 3 spots of grey to like 25% colonized over night so I opened it up and smelled it. Sure enough it was the same exact smell. It was whatever contamed all 12 of my other jars. I would have let it keep going but I was 100% it was not mycellium.

Anyway, thanks Veda for the help it means a lot to me.
