Need some help identifying
    #10887867 - 08/19/09 03:34 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

This is one that I had the clearest pictures of. A more experienced mushroom hunter told us that they where in the psylocybe family and we are unsure and are not about to try them until we know. When we pick them, if you touch the bottom of the cap or squeeze the stem it will almost immediately start "bruising" or turning blue. We live 30 minutes south of Kansas City, Missouri. I looked up the kind of psychoactive mushrooms that grow here in Missouri but could not find any good, clear pictures to be able to use as a "guide" if you will. From the information I've gathered, they look like they're in the bolete family. Could someone help me identify these, and or show me how I can identify wild psychoactive mushrooms here in Missouri?

One of the smaller boletus species. Not active, possibly likely edible. Not dangerously poisonous in any case. FYI, there are no active boletus species.

This mushroom has pores. All psilocybe species have gills. The 'information' from that 'more experienced hunter' is worth nothing. Don't listen to him/her, (s)he obviously has no clue whatsoever about identifying mushrooms.

That's what I thought. And I'm confused as to what you mean by active.. do you mean sprouting now?

Looks like a Xerocomus of some sort.

Molecular phylogenetic studies strongly imply that Xerocomus is a heterogeneous genus of polyphyletic origin.

Welcome to the Shroomery.

I think your mushroom belongs to the Boletus campestris group.
