UK finds (Berkshire) 6 species.

I went for a wander the other day in south east England. Lots of silver birch trees about. The habitat for these was all similar as they were found within about a 70 metre radius of each other. Temp Approx 20c.. No rain down here really for about a week and a half.

All specimens were left at the site and not taken home.


Race 1

I only found small species growing in a couple of clusters. Maybe it is a younger specimen of one of the other races listed here??






Race 2

This was found in a few stages of development. Interesting brown specks on the younger ones. Cap curved upwards in older age and began to crack.

Race 3

I remember the cap on these being fairly firm like that of a shitake mushroom. Only two shots here of the gills and caps from the top.




Race 4

My favourite looking species. These came out of the ground like eggs.. where they came from the floor there was a slight nib/tale but they were very rounded. Very firm and no gills visible from the outside. When split open it was like dense sponge (but not as soft as that). Purple with purple colouring showing on the cap (i believe this may have been distributed from the centre with my finger)





Race 5

The last one i found. Stumpy, slightly dried out. Underneath the cap was yellow and just like sponge.

Apologise if anything is not specific enough here. It was just a casual look on the floor which led to these pics as opposed to taking specimens/spore prints. Hopefully the pictures can show these mushrooms off properly.

As i say all were found in a little wooded area off of a field between tall silver birch trees. lots of decaying wood with some patchy areas of grass. Some trees recently cut down.

1)  Honey mushrooms
2)  Psathyrella, perhaps candolleana.
3)  More Honey mushrooms
4)  Poison Pigskin
5)  Some kind of Boletus

is this blueing underneth the cap of the first bolete and did the other also blue when touched underneath? looks like Xerocomus to me, the older specimen looks like X. subtomentosus.

if the small one was blueing underneath the cap i'm pretty sure it's a different species, but it would be importent to know how fast it turns blue and if the flesh also bruises when cut. if so how strong and fast does it bruise?

oh god, i want to be out hunting but i have the cold... at this time of year :mad:

Good shout on the Boletes. Don't remember any blueing on them when i touched them. As i say i left them at the site. I'm after actives really but whilst the season isn't ready i'm using inactives as an introduction to identifying, handling and studying mushrooms generally.

ok, it looked like intensive blueing on the small one, but must be some kind of dirt then

you should look up some infos about edibles which are easy to identify, you'll come across some for sure.
for example most boletes are easy to id and most are edible

Ah ok. Thank you for the tip. I suppose that would be the next stage.. to get used to the idea of eating a mushroom i haven't bought at the grocers and feeling safe.
