Possible Contam in Monotub - Green Mold? (Pics)
    #10887320 -

Okay so this showed up in the last day or 2 and I'm pretty sure is contaminated but not 100% of what the contamination is. I hope there is some way to combat this before it gets worse. Especially since I see lots of pins now :frown:

once you're hit with green contam it's pretty much done for. My friend recently tried to battle trich and learned that it's not really possible. The best you can hope to do is slow it down so you can at least get the first flush before you chunk it.

Even then my friend would advocate if you'd rather be safe than sorry to just toss it out, but here's what my friend did to combat mold.

1. In a still air environment get a spoon, and butter knife. Flame sterilize the spoon and wipe with alcohol.  Dig out the effected area and 0.5" surrounding the infected area. Do this as carefully as possible and dig at least 0.5" deep. If possible keep the area you're digging covered as to prevent the spreading of spores (but it's highly likely you already spread the spores just by opening the monotub. It's important that you know that this you cannot fight this contam; all you can HOPE to do is slow it down). If the contam appears to be no deeper than the surface then you are done with step 1. If it appears to go deep into your substrate then you will have to cut out the entire area with the butterknife. Be sure to flame sterilize and alcohol wipe as well.

2. If your contam was just on the surface then pour a thin layer of salt in the entire area that you dug. You want to be able to see salt and no substrate.  If you had to cut out an entire chunk then fill the chunk with dry vermiculite and then cover with salt.  Once the contam'd area is covered in salt get a cap ful of hydrogen peroxide and drop a few drops. The hydrogen peroxide will spread throughout the salt; saturating it with less peroxide than you would think.

3. that's it. Alternatively if you dont want to dig and avoid risking spreading spores you could pour salt directly above the infected area and put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide also. My friend has used this method with some success as well. Sometimes you'll find that trying to dig is counter productive and just salting the area is best.

That's it.. that is pretty much all you can do short of tossing the entire thing out. Which is what is recommended in most cases since combatting the mold is troublesome; you risk infecting other tubs and your yield won't be as good and you could  make better use of that tub by starting over.  But the steps above are a good way to slow down the mold but it's damn near impossible to stop.

My friend recently harvested almost 4oz (dehydrated weight) out of 2 tubs that he used this method on. In his case he was able to slow the spread of the contam area and harvest his shrooms. He then took the substrate from his two tubs and buried it 6 inches into the ground outside. He might get some outdoor shrooms later or he might get nothing; but trying never hurt anyone.

That's all the advice my friend has. Play it safe and throw it out, but if you want to risk it then do the salt/peroxide suggestion above.

btw, your contam area is pretty large. my friend says if he had one that big he would just toss it and start over.

Thanks for the info. Which pics would be the contamination? Just the 2 first ones or is the greyish mycelium in pics 3 & 5 contam as well?

I’ve had luck getting rid of it on cakes and going on to fruiting but never in a casing.  Once it shows up like that in a casing it is probably so deep into the casing that it’s too late.

So my take is:

Okay that first pic of a casing is from the FAQ. I'm guna take it out so it doesn't distract people from my pics.

Sorry for bumping this but I really need help with this. Is this definitely green mold and is what rorschachX said the right coarse of action?

Bury it outdoors. Mold mycelium is visible in all of your pictures. it's green mold

Ahh damn....How can I prevent this from happening next time?

I have this other tub which is ready to case, but the mycelium looks kinda funky and looks like green mold. I'm hoping though that it's just dieing mycelium or just maybe off coloured because it's wet? Would those water droplets be a problem?

Here's the other tub

The water shouldn't be a problem, unless it's pooling up.

I think your tub looks healthy.

I recently had a similar problem. I believe it is caused by contaminated spawn. Though all the jars I used colonized fine and smelled fine, so it might have been excessive moisture + lack of cleanliness.

Well the spawn was nice and healthy and was colonizing nice and pure white. Then after I checked my other tub and found it was contaminated I had a shower then looked at that one and I instantly thought contam. Could it be from a gas build up since the air can't escape and make it go that funny colour? Because I have left it a bit long before casing.

Toss that first tub in a shady spot outdoors. I recently had a tub go green and it's producing just fine outside.

My grain spawn seemed fine, too - smelled good, looked good, etc. Contaminant spores could have potentially landed on a broken grain kernel or trich might have been growing on a kernel stuck in the middle of the jar. It happens sometimes.

As long as I don't open the tub the mold spores won't spread will they? It seems to be going well with a heap of mushrooms around the outside of the mold patch in the middle. When I open to harvest I will do it outside.

The mushrooms will have mold spores on them won't they? So I probably shouldn't use my dehydrator to dry them since the dehydrator is in the same room as the other tub?

Brennus when you say "Toss that first tub in a shady spot outdoors" do you mean just put the whole tub outside and leave the contents in it? How did you dry your mushrooms?

This is them now

if possible, move it out of the house. tubs are not airtight. i would harvest now and dump the contents of the tub in a shady spot. then you can wash your tub and start over

after harvesting, just get them as dry as possible, as fast as possible.

I tossed the entire substrate block under a bush in a backyard and threw grass clippings over it.

I dry my fruits in a Nesco food dehydrator.

That's a nice flush, but you've probably got trich all over your grow room now. Future grows might be affected.

Okay so today I'll put them outside and harvest. If I put them in my food dehydrator to dry them fast will that spread spores in my grow room? Also what temp do the spores die at? Maybe I might move the dehydrator to the laundry or something temporarily then clean it when I'm done.

Yea it will spread spores, but your grow room is probably already full of spores. You'll probably want to vacuum it and clean it up after you're done with whatever grows are going on now

mold spores will die in 140*F water definitely. Killing the spores shouldn't be necessary if you clean up afterwords and follow sterile technique in future grows

Okay thanks mate. I was thinking about trying for a second flush but have the tub outside. This mold would definitely take over by then or could it be possible?

I ended up burying the substrate just in plain soil then got a bucket and drenched the soil i covered it with.

With dehydrating should I dehydrate it at the highest setting (160f - 71C) or will it be fine at the usual lowest setting? I just don't want the mold spores to be hanging around.

After I put them in the dehydrator I had a hot shower. Would this wash away the spores? I left my contaminated clothes outside btw.

i think im going through some black mold, grey mold, and some yellow stuff [Re: Buttsack]
    #10940551 -

hello, im new here, a friend of mine told me to post some pics in this site, and i went straight to the thread that talk about contamination. i know that green mold is bad but i dont know about black mold...grey mold...and some yellow water...
the thing is i used rye for this procedure instead of vermiculite, because i didnt find any in this country...my frnd and i went through the whole procedure, taught me how to inaculate and everything. with time some were doing fine but as soon as i wanted to check on them i guess the next day they would get all balck and grey but the mescalin furry things are still growing in there.. i guess ill post the pictures and ask if any one can help me here, should i throw it or leave it?

Hey mate you definitely have mold there. Best thing to do with jars is to throw the contents out because it is impossible to save the substrate. I PC for an hour then I usually get a bucket of bleach/water and open the jar underwater so the spores don't get in the air and stick to your clothes. I usually let soak for a few hours then wash it with soapy water. Then I PC again and it's ready to use. Maybe overkill but I haven't had any contams in the same jar twice.

You should probably start your own thread in future. Do a bit of reading as well. When you can't find the info your looking for then start your own thread and ask questions there.
