50/50+ questions
    #10884181 - 08/18/09 05:09 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

K so im sitting here drinking 7 and 7 getting ready to make my first batch of this particular casing.  I previously followed magash's rye tek including his casing procedure.  Which he uses coir/verm which took me 6 months to figure out that most people consider that outdated and not efficient.  Don't get me wrong I've had success with that casing but I want to switch to peat.  But I have some questions and procedure questions.  I want to mix the whole batch together and then put in quart jars with tyvek and hole in lid to pressure cook and store. Will this be ok?

I have the peat moss.
I have the verm.
I have crushed oyster shells.
I have hydrated lime.

Can I mix first and add the hydrated lime first too and pressure cook or does the hydrated lime need to be added after the pressure cook?

Sorry couldn't find any info on that.  Planning on doing a pretty big tray tomorrow so I wanna get it ready today.

Mix everything, then pasteurize. Don't sterilize.

Heat to 140-180*F for an hour, when it's cool all the way through, spawn it.

My recipe is a little different than yours ...

50/50 peat and vermiculite with 1 tablespoon of gypsum and one teaspoon of hydrated lime for every cup of peat used.

As stated, pasteurize.

Also, I don't worry about perfect field capacity moisture content .... in fact I like it on the dry side because it spreads better when it is drier and then you can mist the nicely spread casing layer to near saturation.

I would either add some gypsum or powder some of the oyster shell and add that to the casing layer mix.  The crushed oyster shell by itself it just to fluff the mix up some, for texture. The other two help hold the pH stable and prevent wild swings.

It's also a good idea to test the pH of your casing layer before applied.  I don't bother testing my bulk substrates, just a couple times, but i'll test with a casing when i use them (not often).

I learned how to test the pH from some older posts of RR's.  You need to mix everything separate from the moist vermiculite (because verm is inert, yo), and wait one hour after adding the lime before you test the pH and than later add the moist vermiculite in.

Just some suggestions, i know some people just follow good teks to adjust the pH of their casing layers properly instead of testing.  Best of luck! ~Pixie~

k well i used a rolling pin technique to powderize the oyster shell so i think that should help with the ph in addition to the texture of the bigger pieces.  hmm now i gotta figure out how to pasteurize :frown:

what are the cons of sterilizing? I've read about not killing all the organisms...is it that crucial?

Sterilizing, from my understanding, gives opposing fungi and bacterium a better chance to get a foothold.

Pasteurization just kills off enough to give your myc the advantage.

That's just my understanding. I could be wrong.

k thanks did RR's method in the pressure cooker.  Gonna spawn next time instead of a lot of colonized rye in a tray lol...but another dilemma is i use pmps...sooo lots of variations ima be doing..

He doesn't use a pressure cooker for pasteurization of casing and he's a pretty big advocate AGAINST sterilizing substrates and casings.

He's not PCing though, he just said you can use that if you don't have a large pot. You don't ever close the pressure valve on it.

I am in the same boat as you.... I have tried jiffy mix which is pretty much 50/50 but for some reason i get contams in it but not the rye berries.

I tried RR's pastuerizing method but with failure, now maybe it was not his method but at that time i remember him chimming in....

I am now going back to 50/50... Have you tried using the mushroom info section under casing ? there is a tek that is 50/50 which just uses microwaving for sterizilation......

I used this tek in the past in my younger days and it worked better then jiffy mix. i suggest taking a look at it ...  here is a link http://www.shroomery.org/55/60-40-Vermiculite-and-Coco-Coir-Casing-Tek

ya i had no problems with the coir/verm(added crushed oyster shell) casing had no trich problems so im switching to peat to see if it yields better or does better in general will compare the two personally and see what the difference is and see why a lot of people on here say that coir shouldn't be used in a casing layer....

Ok, then you should be fine. Something else is wrong. Is it contaminating before or after pins/full colonization?

If it's before, you just have a contam problem and need to work cleaner and faster.

If it's after or during pinning or after first flush, then you don't have enough FAE.
