Help me grow my cacti in cold climate

I have a few cacti that are doing so well. More then likely its because its cold here.

What can I do to help this guys out? I have a fluorescent bulb that's not doing much for any of my plants. I saw one picture of a trash can lined with mylar and a pot plant in it. Would this work for my cacti?

I dont know what to do

Let the cacti go dormant like they do in nature. If it's cold, you should be putting them somewhere with little to no light without watering them - they will go dormant until spring.

A fluoro bulb wont do much of anything for cacti bigger than seedlings. If you're going with artificial lighting, you'll need something like an HPS or MH. The trash can lined with mylar idea would work, but it all depends on the lighting. Even with that reflective of a surface, I still don't think it would be worth growing a cactus in there with something like a fluoro. Just grow them naturally, they'll explode with growth once spring comes around.

Columnars like trichs under lights won't do to well.
Get as much full sunlight as possible or make a small greenhouse, search engine might help there or google.
Provide a heating pad for seedlings if necessary.

I would like to make some kind of a green house but I havent seen any hood small designs. Any one I can make one out of something? maybe putting a soda bottle over them? They can get light in the morning but not from noon to sunset.

I love your cacti garden. I saved the pictures. Can you tell me a little about your rocks in your post? I had rocks in mine but it seemed like it help the moisture in and the gnats were loving the soil. I took the rocks out.

never had any problems with the rocks/gravel holding in too much moisture.
but bear in mind that my plants are kept outside or in the greenhouse during the summer months.
they get alot of sun and good airflow so the soil dries fast. many of my cacti are potted in clay pots too, which dry out really fast...
too fast sometimes, in that case the later of gravel helps to retain moisture.

if you are having trouble getting the soil to dry out then use a looser soil mix with more grit/sand so it won't retain so much moisture, or clay pots.

That's very weird. Rocks should do the opposite, and having a top layer should prevent fungus gnats all together, not attract them.

Your best bet would be purchasing some HPS. I'm not sure how big your cacti collection is, so I'm unable to suggest the wattage. They're expensive to buy, expensive to power, and create a decent amount of heat. I'd be lying if I said I don't keep some cacti going year round with HPS, but most of the more experienced collectors here favor natural dormancy.

I have all my cacti and plants under a 400W HPS hooked to the ceiling with a reflector, and they are doing fine.

My grow area is around 4x3ft. I don't know if 400w is recommended or 600w would be better, but 400w definitely does the job.

HPS lighting is fine for small globular type cacti and even young columnar types.
it is not sufficient for taller cacti, even a 1000w HPS won't prevent stretching.

by young what do you mean? My huge san pedro (18" counting the pup) has not been stretching at all and it's not even directly under the light.

Oh well I'll be fine for a long time then :tongue:, I dont want them to get too big and when they do I'll cut and propagate.
