Hello, I would like to know what I am doing wrong here. Every time I use jiffy mix i get contamination.... I just made 3 trays and each one of them had gotten some sort of a contam. This contam is yellow, sorta like a yellow powder. When i dig into the casing layer which is jiffy mix i see yellow. if i move it or disturb it i see a powder... This past time i RR"s pastuerization tek. I took 5 quart jars of field capacity jiffy mix and put it into 5 quart jars then i placed those with aluminum foil into the pressure cooker. fire it up with lid on but no weight until i see steam coming out. then i let that go for 5 minutes and then turn off stove for half hour. Then turn back on and do it again. after the second time i let it sit until cool and then use.
Well, this did not work for me. i get contams.. am i doing some thing wrong?????
if i am making trays do i have to use a casing layer? if so what is the best to use? I have some vermiculite left over but that is all. I was using jiffy mix do to its premade quality not to mention it has everything you need premade just add water and sterilize.
Maybe i should just break up the quart jar of colonized rye berries into the tray and let it colonize and then put a casing layer on it but what should i use please help very fustrated here about to give up.... thanks

Simple solution. Don't use jiffy mix.
Sounds like yeast if it's yellow and powdery. Just use coir, bet you it's cheaper than jiffy mix anyway.

Ugh, sounds frustrating to have this happen multiple times. Perhaps this isn't the best advice for you, but at least consider giving up on jiffy-mix for the time being and use something else. I don't say this because you're using jiffy-mix, but because it's a route to go after having multiple failures with a specific casing layer, bulk substrate, grain spawn, whatever.

You don't have to have a casing layer IF you spawn your grain to a bulk substrate. If you just try to fruit grains by themselves you'll have problems with them drying out (i've never bothered actually trying this myself, let me say. Just stating that it's not the route to go).
Adding a casing layer onto your substrate can give you better results; I've seen this first hand. But they are optional with cubensis. ~Pixie~

Well, if i can just use coir that is good cause i have 5 bricks of it that i am not using....
What do i have to do to the coir to be able to use it as a casing or a spawn?
