So i need constant sound

I have to have a constant backround sound such as a fan or music or it will be dead silent and i'll get paranoid. Kind of like dogs do. I can't sleep in silence, can't work, or just sit there. It's kindof annoying.. Does anyone know why this is? Scientific answers help too!=] But i'm going to bed now so i'll check the replies in the morning, thanks.

I always sleep with a fan, it serves as white noise to drown the other sounds out.
I'm not quite sure what's up with always having to have background noise though.

are you afraid of your inner monologue (or dialogue, or trialogue...if that's where you're all at )?
go into a sensory deprivation chamber (or a dark, quiet room) on mushrooms or acid, that may help.
or meditate, outside - there are many calming sounds to help relax.
i was a little like this as well, always with the fucking i-pod. i used to do the fan thing but not anymore just wastes power.

I'm sure there are adequate neurological explanations for why the brain sometimes craves consistent stimuli in the form of sound.
Personally, I have to be listening to music constantly (bathroom, kitchen, sleep, reading, etc). It is a weird habit, but it cheers me up and seemingly puts me more in control of my day and my surroundings.

scientific isn't what yer looking for here sport - PSYCHOLOGICAL is the correct terminology
somebody here already mentioned something about it in fact...I don't remember the correct terminology, but it comes down to an uncomfort in your own personal inner dialogue (i.e. you instinctively know that *something* is wrong in your life, and you're afraid to even think about it because you know damn well that once you understand what lies at the core of this one, then you're suddenly going to feel obligated to do something about it)
my guess is that you're trying to avoid admitting to something that you suspect you have no control over anyway (which, I assure you, is simply NOT fucken true to begin with) and so you live your life in a constant 'interruption' of sorts so that you have an excuse as to why you're not able to get around to it yet...but that's a cop-out and you know it
you're only doing more damage to yourself by ignoring these problems

This is because you are used to having sound on all the time. It is a habit and a comfort zone just like anything else you are used to.
Spend a week with all that shit turned off and you'll get over it.

Tried that, a few times actually, only thing i found was a kid talking about the same thing and how he had ADD and other people were saying they also needed sound, i didn't find any info on why they needed it. But if you are able to find something with google, by all means ill accept it and read it lol.

no x_X i'm fine, it's just that i need constant noise like always and when i turn off my fan which is always on i start to get paranoid and have to turn it back on.

this is the most plausible answer for my situation i think because i wasnt like this until after a hot ass summer when i had the fan on all the time cuz it was hot and i tried turning it off and it sounded awkward.. Hey, same here. I'm sure someone just mentioned it above this post, but I have it where I hear ringing constantly in my ears.
Anyways, I need constant noise when I'm trying to sleep, so I always have the fan on blowing down, even if it Is cold.
I never thought anything of this.
