50/50+ question.... possible typo?
    #1088059 - 11/26/02 05:12 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

This is the recipe as I copied it from the link found in FAQ:

The exact mix, to fill a filter patch bag 3/4 full is:
15 1/2 cups vermiculite
15 1/2 cups peat moss
4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
1.2 cups of hydrated lime
1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water

Cups and gallons.
Fractions mixed with decimals.
And my favourite... "one cup short" .

With all due respect, (and appreciation) one needs to be clearer when quoting scientific method.

A gallon in one part of the world is 3,785.41184 mL but in the next country over its 4,546.09 mL

Also, is the value for hydrated lime a typo? Is it supposed to be in DECIMAL form? Because 1.2 cups = 1 1/5 cups NOT 1 1/2 cups or 1/2 cup as I have seen it interpreted previously.

I posted a request for clarification on proper casing ratios and got answers ranging from 4:1 all the way up to 30:1... sooooooo... I'll make this simpler.

Can someone fill in the blanks here for me? Looking for an expert opinion... not just someone to tell me that a cup=240 mL because that is false!

There is NO SUCH MEASUREMENT AS A "CUP", PEOPLE!!!!! A "cup" can vary by as much as 20% depending on who you believe.

According to certain conversion tables:

200mL= a metric "cup" .
227.3045 mL= an Imperial 8 ounce "cup"
236.58824 mL = an American 8 ounce "cup"

In fact, the only person who knows for sure the number of mL in Hawk's "cup".........is Hawk!!!!!

I don't want to sound picky.... but I have an entire month of work on the line here... and I want to be sure I'm using the right values. All I know for sure is that a mL is the same everywhere on the planet. So why not use it ?

50/50+ Casing Ingredients

mL of Peat Moss=
mL of Vemiculite=
mL of Hydrated Lime=
mL of Oyster Shell=
mL of Water=

mL of Peat Moss=150
mL of Vemiculite=150
mL of Hydrated Lime=0
mL of crushed limestone(chalk, calcium carbonate) = 15
mL of Oyster Shell=15
mL of Water= The casing ingredients should be mixed in a bowl, then the water should be added. The correct water amount is reached, when you take a handful of the casing mix and squeeze it in your hand, not too hard, a few drops of water should come out of it. That?s the correct moisture.

Obviously this won?t fill the gallon bag, but you get the idea.

i don't have exact measurments for you, i can tell you my method tho...

start out with equal amounts of

peatmoss or coco choir and vermiculite

than guestimate 15% shell. mix good

sprinkle a light coating of lime on top, mix good again.

then comes preference.

i bake my mix at 300 degrees for 1 hr. then add bottled water enough so that when you pick up a hand full, it does not drip unless you squeeze it..

or add the water to that same content and then bake, it usually dries out just a cunt hair... thats why i add after... so i know exactlly.

im sure someone will post exact ratios they use, but like i said, i don't believe it to be absolute necessary to have perfect measurements.

Hey ribbit,

Thanks for taking the time to offer your method...I'll give it a try sometime later. But I'm gonna have to get a few more flushes under my belt before I start "guesstimating" and "sprinkling" in my recipes. By the way, how many mL in a "cunt hair"? Just kiddin...

For all you folks who have had numerous cultivation successes... a "pinch" here and a "sprinkle" there may do the trick... because of your experience.

But for someone who has never done this before, one needs a tangible frame of reference for success. Hence the request for actual numbers. Thanks.
