Can I get a greenhouse critique?
    #10879790 - 08/18/09 12:00 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I have been doing a lot of reading and here is what I built:

When I first set it up, I had the cool mist (Vicks v400) piped in from the outside because I liked the idea of all that fresh air coming in. It was like this:

The vicks was in a tub because it was leaking.
The output of humidity and fresh air seemed pretty pitiful, then I took the cone off and Im pretty sure it wasnt all the way in the "locked" position.  It wasn't dirty as I just got this thing new, but anyhow it cranks now.

So currently I have the humidifier on the bottom rack,
and I cut slits in the greenhouse like this:
(Excuse my MSpaint masterpiece :grin:)

The red lines are the cuts, I can build things better than I can draw them, the real thing is much more symmetrical haha
There is a 3/4" hole in the back of the top shelf that is just a 90 degree PVC elbow that has nothing hooked up to it anymore.

I have an ultrasonic on the way that Im not sure Ill need, but will be good to have in case.

Questions:

-Im still looking for a decent hygrometer, an accurate one, one that will tell me if its over 100% and not go all haywire.  Any suggestions?

-Right now Im running the cool mist for 30 min on / 2 hrs off, 30 min is the lowest amount of time for this timers on/off switch.  Sound right?

-To many cuts?  Id rather have to run the humidifier more and have more FAE than the other way around.

-When I put trays in there, you put them all to either side to keep the stream of humidity from the cool mist uninterrupted right?

Thanks in advance for any and all input!

Looks good. Turn it on and take some rh and temp readings from each tier. 1 a day, to see if its all consistant. Good job, you get that 4-tier off ebay for 30 bucks?

Got my ultrasonic on the way from amazon for 23.99 including shipping.
Total Im into it for around 150 so far.
Couldnt find a tub big enough for the bottom, so I got 2 and ghetto spliced them together with duck tape :grin:

Sounds like a winner to me. Ebay can hook you up sometimes when you least expect it. I saw that same 4-tier on another website on sale for 85 plus shipping. I Laughed and sent them an email w/ a link to the ebay page. They never replied:shrug:

Is the hole in the top for a exhaust fan I read in another post?

I got the same setup but using perlite only and its time put a humdifier in and makes changes asap I need the space. Thanks

That looks like a nice setup, the standup for 30 bucks is a good deal. Might have to copy you.

That is awesome.

I am gonna do the same thing.

One question though.

Would it be better to have your perlite tray inside and under your flaps??

I am sure it is fine....  But I consider that you would get alot of drying out with it exposed on every side.

I would pipe your ultrasonic humidifier into the top of the GH using flexible tubing.  That way, the humidifier will be outside your GH, eliminating excess moisture getting into the electrical system of the humidifier (which could be a problem).  Also, humid air is denser than dry air, so your humidity will enter in the top, and "rain" down to the bottom, where your perlite can catch it.  I've had problems with my ultrasonic not getting the upper shelves as humid as the bottom ones.

Another benefit would be that you won't have to open your GH to refill the humidifier.

This is basically how I have my greenhouses set up. I use ultrasonic foggers from http://www.mainlandmart.com/foggers.html ; Item: M001. I was using an Exo Terra fogger, but it took a crap. Exo Terra is just overpriced junk. I absolutely LOVE the air pump I use. It’s an Elite Optima. You can adjust the amount of air by turning the dial on the top.

I always keep a fan on the bottom shelf inside my greenhouses to keep the fog from settling. The fan also draws fresh air in from around the base (since greenhouses do not seal perfectly). If I want more fresh air then I just unzip one side of the greenhouse door a little (no cutting necessary). I’ve been using the fan the comes with Holmes humidifiers.

I connect the fogger system to the greenhouse like this:

I start by drilling out the hole

Now I use a thread tap ½” thread tap:

I put on the clear plastic and cut a hole using an exacto knife:

Now the fittings. A ½” barbed elbow, rubber O-ring, and a plastic washer I made.

DONE!

I use 1 timer for this fogger system. The fogger and air pump runs on the same timer. The fan inside the greenhouse runs 24/7. My lights are on another timer set for 12/12. Every aspect of this setup is adjustable. I can adjust how much air/for goes into the greenhouse by turning the dial on the air pump. I can adjust how many times per day the fogger kicks on and for how long by setting the timer. The amount of fresh air can be easily adjusted by unzipping the zipper.

One tip though … NEVER pack the greenhouse completely full or you’ll inhibit proper air circulation (from the fan) throughout the greenhouse. Lack of air circulation will cause the fog to settle and oversaturate your substrate. Still air also encourages a variety of catam if I’m not mistaken.

Correct.  If the spray from the coolmist hits the bottom of your trays, it will condense and rain down, making a mess.  Having it open all the way up also allows the coolmist to circulate air throughout the greenhouse, helping to prevent contamination.

What a pleasant surprise, I thought this thread died!  Thanks for all the replies!

Tampaguy: The hole with the 90 degree elbow in it was for the cool mist, but I have since put it inside the GH and now its just a hole, no exhaust fans.

KittyFriend420:  The reason for the GH sitting right in the perlite is I wanted the perlite to be able to catch any drips running down the plastic.  The exposed perlite is dried out, yes, but the stuff on the inside is moist.

NIN: What is your timing like on the fogger system, Im still trying to figure out how to keep my RH up without saturating my substrates...
~~~
So Im still fiddling with this thing before I put anything in it.  Just have to have it all setup before my sawdust bags are done.  Considering the fact that they arent even made yet and my grain spawn is just now showing signs of growth, Ive got a minute..
Here is how I have it now:
I had an Idea to get better FAE, and it was to make a vent for the intake on the coolmist, sticking out of the back of the GH, like this:
Still drawing in fresh air, but no hoses to worry about back pressure!
I have 2 digital timers.  My only problem with them is they only have 7 on/off cycles per 24 hr period.  This seems to be the maximum of any timer Ive found.  Here is a 24 hr clock, with the timing layout of the humidifiers.  Keep in mind this is still a work in progress.  I think I may need to amp this schedule up a bit tho:
Seeing as my hygrometers (all 3 of them) all read completely different %s, Im getting frustrated to say the least.  The new analog I got from the cigar shop which was supposed to be the good one, wont go up past 70%.  My weather channel weather station with its remote sensor says im between 83% and 94%, but I dont trust it as far as I can throw it, and the other is a zoo-med analog that stays between 75-85.
:confused:
Haha, pretty slick intake for the coolmist now :P I've heard many people saying lately to put the cool mist in the greenhouse rather than hose it in. I just think that if you are able to maintain humidity having it outside the greenhouse, why not go for it since you get the continuous fae?
Plus, if the hose you are using has a large enough inner diameter, I'd think that back pressure wouldn't be a problem? I'll be setting mine up with 3/4" inside diameter tubing from ace hardware. If I can get the humidity up to par, I'll leave it as is, if not I'll just throw in a Ultrasonic.
Search for 'cycle timer'.  They have intervals ranging from a few seconds of on and off time.  At least one of our sponsors has them.
