What's a germ pore

Well i think the title makes my question pretty obvious. I've been hunting subs a lot lately, i'm getting the hang of it, but it's a real pain to have to post them on here to id them. What things should i observe when iding them my self? i have read that they contain a obvious germ spore but i don't actually know what that is.

A germ pore is a microscopic feature, for identifying P.subaeruginosa you do not need a microscope. Generally the macroscopic features are more than enough to give a positive id.

Things to look for:

*Smooth Caramel/Yellow cap, often viscid, that is Hygrophaneous, with a separable pellicle. Example of Hygrophaneous:



*White stem (not always) that is hollow and fibrous, bruises blue when damaged. Partial veil is White, finely cortinate that disappears and leaves a faint mark on the upper stem. Example of the Partial veil:

  ~Note the spore colour on remnants of veil.

* Spore print should be a Purple-Brown colour eg:




Another very important feature is the smell :yesnod: Smell every one that you find, they have a unique smell that your brain will remember. If I ever find them in a public place I pick one up and smell it without looking at it, so not to be obvious to others. I will know without looking whether or not it is a sub.

That photo is not a photo of a mushroom spore though.  Mushrooms spores are more typically apical (on one end).

Its a weak area in the cell wall where the mycelium germinates from.

The germ pore is on the end of the spore.  The large central depression is an artifact of the prepartion for electron microscopy and isn't normally present.

Here's a spore micrograph that shows a germ pore reasonably well...




Note that the two unlabelled spores at the top also show germ pores.
