I have $180 dollars to spend on cultivation please give me ideas.
    #10877224 -

Ok, I have decided to spend 180 on some good supplies for my terrarium, jars,  and other needed supplies.
I already have a humidifier and a florescent  light.
What are some terrariums that I would be able to build?
I have seen many, but I want one that is automatic mostly

Look into starting with PF tek style jars but then spawn to poo (if you can get a pressure cooker, start with WBS).  Use the links in my signature to get started.

If you had one 10ml syringe, you could knock up 10 BRF jars and spawn those to bulk trays in a shotgun FC.  If you used horse manure in the right amounts, you could turn 10 BRF cakes into 5 dry ounces with ease.

This way, all you have to do is start making some PF cakes according to http://www.mushroomvideos.com .  Then once you had fully colnoized cake, using a food chopper, chop them up into tiny bits and spawn to pasteurized horse manure, or even coir/coffee/verm if you can't find free poo.  Look at the horse poo tek to see how this is done.  It's just as easy as the PF tek, there's just a few more steps.  It's worth it though because of the yields.

$180 should be more than enough to get this going.  I bet you'll have a lot of money left over.

The best combination of cheap and automatic, while still getting good yields can be had with a monotub setup.  You can buy a 27 qt latch top tub for 4 bucks.  Pressure cooker is 30-80 bucks for a cheap starter model.  A 12 pack of quart jars is about 9-10 bucks.  10 lbs of bird seed is about 4 bucks.  Spores will run you anywhere from free to 20 bucks per syringe.  Incidentals such as alcohol, micropore tape, polyfill, foil, etc. are all like a dollar or two a piece but it adds up fast.  I'd say you can easily get several monotubs going for 180 bucks if you play it right.  Start reading some monotub teks.  Any other method besides pf tek will cost more than that.  Personally, I have never ever made a pf jar in my life.  I jumped right into grains, made my mistakes and never looked back.  Good luck bro.

You can start with PF tek, just use it as spawn.  If you're going to do a monotub though, you may as well start with grains, but you'll have to have a PC for that.

The one benefit bulk trays have is that if one tray goes bad, you can catch it in time not to ruin your other trays.  If your monotub goes bad, then it's all bad.

I decided on doing quite a few large bulk trays for my next project, but I'm going to do a G2G and use those for a big monotub.

Just pick a tek and stick with it.  Follow it to the T and you can't go wrong!  :super:

Start with buying the biggest PC you can fit on your stove, or the cheapest All American you can get your hands on.

If you have any money left over, look into other necessary supplies.

some say theres no such thing as a fully automated setup.

as close to automated as i can think of is a monotub. You dont need a humidifier unless your running a martah or greenhouse.

monotubs and double tubs kick ass. They maintain themselfs and if you want to get a little more out of them or have a stuborn strain, mist and fan it once or twice a day.

Simple and effective system requiring no humidifier or perlite.

$180 isnt that much, but you can get somethnig going easily for that.

If you have a pressur cooker, bonus which means you can do grains and spawn to hpoo that you collect for free :-)

if you have horses neer you, collect that lovely feild aged manure while the summers still out and stock up on it for the winter. Free substrate and it will serve you well.

What you will definatly need

Clear plastic tub for a glovebox
tubs for making monos or doubles
latex gloves ( stops dead skin cells from landing on your stuff)
70% IPA (for sanitising)
polyfill (pillow stuffing, stuffed animals, or buy it from a crafts store)
spawn (you can use pf cakes, or if you feel brave, straight brown rice, ts a little tricky though)
Bulk (hpoo is awesome, cow poo works too, or coir, straw etc)
Verm (usefull for mixing with bulk for little extra moisture and to aid fluffynes, also needd for pf tek)
micropore tape ( i use it instead of dry verm as a filter)
Jars (1/2 pint wide mouth for pf tek. Larger jars are used for grains)
Strainer/colinder (for draining grains if you use grains)
Spores (trusted vendor like sporeworks)
black trash bags (for lining the bottom of monos/doubles/_

I would like to add my 2 cents here.  If you do several smaller monotubs, instead of one huge one, you can spread out the risk and then this point becomes void.  Let's say you do (4) 27 qt monotubs.  That's almost the same as saying one 18 gallon monotub if you consider the amount of sub and spawn you need.  The difference is, if the big tub goes green, you're screwed, but if 2 out of the 4 smaller tubs goes green, you still have half your project.  Think about it.  I've been at this for a hot minute and unless I'm doing a gymnasium full of monotubs, I'd rather have more smaller tubs than several larger ones any day.  It means you have to drill and stuff a couple extra tubs but the work vs. reward is worth it.  I have actually done very nice 6 qt double tubs.  I abandoned those because I got tired of screwing with duct tape to seal em, and I am confident enough in my skills to go a little bigger.  I now do 27 qt latch top tubs, and that is just right for me.  They are super easy to maintain and I don't beat myself up when one goes green, and I try to keep enough in rotation that I always have fresh produce.  Good luck.

Do you have spores yet Nick? That's gonna be $15-20.00 that you NEED NEED to get started. Vermiculite can be tricky to find in some areas also. It can be found online easily. The pressure cooker isn't necessary for small PF tek jars. They can be pasteurized in boiling water. Look up the PF Tek or click here. I'd steer clear of the monotub type grows on the first run just for the simple fact that they are so susceptible to contamination and should you put all your eggs in one basket or tub as the case may be you could end up with nothing but a dirty tub. Glass fish tanks/terrariums are nice because you can see through them, but hardly worth the money or time. Get a storage tote and make a Shotgun FC. Simply put, it's a plastic tub with lots of holes drilled in it for air exchange. Line the bottom few inches with damp perlite, this will keep the chamber humid enough for good fruiting conditions for the PF cakes. :mushroom2: Most other general growing info can be found here or by  searching the Shroomery Forums here. Good luck and don't any of the arrogant pricks around here give you any shit. Study up stick with it and you'll do just fine. You'll be spawning isolates to coir and coffee in no time, LOL! Pressure Cooker (any kind that fits quarts)
Spores (only need a couple of syringes)
WBS ($3)
Horse poop (free)
Tyvek from post office (free)
Flat of Quart jars (about $20)
Some duct tape.
A few storage bins from the cheapest place you can find them.
Tin foil
Isopropyl alcohol
spray bottle

That's my vote.
Oh and spend some time reading about how to use all this stuff.

+1 on the pf tek.  If you've never done it before and just want a few shrooms, the pf tek is your best guarantee of success.  You'll get them faster and easier, but if you don't mind making some mistakes and having a couple setbacks in the name of education and experience, for the reward of lots of large, nice, healthy, POTENT shrooms, DIVE INTO GRAINS and learn about horse manure substrate blends.  I have a good friend who does both for different reasons, he always just says pftek is faster from start to finish.  I can wait for the good stuff so I just do bulks.  I guess he gets the best of both worlds, but I always have enough backstock that I never need to rush it.  :mushroom2:

Nope, but about 15-20% verm is a great additive to a sub mix.  While it has no nutritional value, it retains moisture well and fluffs your sub, allowing it to breathe.  To avoid horse poo stink, only pick the dry-ass nuggets of shit.  They should weigh nothing when you pick them up and look like brown tufts of lawn clippings.  If you think it might still be wet, break it open.  If it's wet and green, toss it away.  You want the light, fluffy shit nuggets and they won't smell.  They just smell kinda like horse.  But not like shit.  Trust me, I thought the same thing at first.  adding about 10-20% spent coffee grounds to the sub will not only add nutrition but also counter any slight horse smell that may be there.:mushroom2:

oh but it doesnt smell if you find the good stuff. Well aged manure is like dirt. If it still has an ammonia smell its not ready

You want to find the stuff that is well dried and has firefang growing in it. It wont smell, will look like nuggets of dirt with bits of straw sticking out of it.

collect it even if you dont plan on using it yet, make sure its dry and store it in a bag in a dry place, i think you need to leave the bag open ??

You could even get a set of cakes going, and make a few extra cakes up to do a mini double tub to get your foot into using hpoo. My mate done that and so did i with some nice results despite his getting hit with some mould he still got an a nice first flush and amazingly a 2nd flush.

we used 2 3 litre food containers made into 1 tub

the lids were gluied together and the middle cut out so your left with the rim that holds the tubs together. :-)

a few of these will produce plenty of shrooms. using 1 1/2 pint cake as spawn.

Ok thank you all, and yes I have spent many months reading up on different teks and how to use and not use and what to do and not do. The hardest thing I think for most people is trying to find the right tek. I started off wanting to to the PF cakes + shotgun terrarium. Then all these poo teks and grain came flying in my face. but now I think I am back to wanting the PF cakes and shotgun style.

I've been getting great results using the pf tek with soda bottle fruiting chambers and have now moved to brown rice spawned to hpoo.

Im hoping to collect hpoo tomorrow provided it doesnt rain before i get to it

no its not better than a shotgun terrarium but they can do well if looked after.

it gets a bit tediious when you got more than a few, since you have to exchange the air in each 1. it gets a bit pointless with more than a few cakes since your exchanging the air for each 1. If you have 6 bottles, thats 6 times the amount of work you have to do if you had a shotgun terrarium.

I use them because im so skint i cant get perlite an tubs and i want to concentrate on using double tubs cause i dont need perlite for that and can get manure for free.

With $180.00 you can easily try both right off the bat, and the fact that you already have some things on hand gives you a financial leg up in the game. If you want to go the grain route right away pre-sterilized spawn bags are almost idiot-proof. Just shoot in the spores or liquid culture and wait. I bought a few 3lb bags of rye a while back, no contams at all. WAY better results if spawned to something else like coir once fully colonized rather than fruiting in the bag or using it like a huge cake. One of my bags had a small hole in it, Sporeworks sent out a replacement immediately. I did inocculate that pierced bag and it actually turned out fine. I was actually impressed with the overall yields.

PC - $50
25 lbs rye grain - $10-25
12 quart jars - $10
2 70+ qt tubs - $20
poly fill - $5
Gypsum - $5-10
4 syringes - $40
alcohol lamp - $10
IPA - $2
box of latex gloves - $5
bulk substrate - free - $50

depending on what you can get where, and what kind of deals you can get, it is completely plausible to get enough for 1 bulk running and a g2g up and running.

I'm in a bit harder, due to needing to get a portable air conditioner.

You won't need a PC to do PF tek, or to use manure.
You only have to pasteurize the manure, not sterilize it.

You WILL need a PC to do any type of grain or agar work, which is what comes immediately after a few successful PF grows. If you have access to one, then use that one, but your friends mothers may not be happy with you borrowing a PC all the time

You can source almost everything cheaper than in the post above me if you look around. Don't skimp on the pressure cooker though! It seriously is the most important (and expensive) item you will buy.
Enjoy.

Simple PF tek purchases should be: tubs for fruiting chamber(s), brown rice, verm, a coffee grinder (from goodwill or something just get a cheapo one), perlite if you're building a shotgun FC, and jars.
That's it, should cost next to nothing. Save the rest of the money for a PC.
