Can I bury my tray in perlite in my shotgun?
    #10873759 - 08/17/09 12:14 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys!  Ok, I have a shotgun FC that is 16" by 20" wide, and 15 inches high.  I am putting 5 inches of perlite in the bottom.  I am using a gallon Ice cream bucket as my fruiting tray that is 5 inches high.  That only leaves 5 inches for my shrooms to grow, and I dont want to limit them in any way!

Would it be ok to set the ice cream bucket on the bottom, and surround it with perlite so my shrooms can have 10 inches to grow?  I know this is a little deep for a tray, but my other trays would have put the sub depth at an inch with the amount of spawn I had.  There will be a lot of exposed perlite surrounding the tub still.

You can but understand that when you cover your perlite you lose surface area with the perlite and in turn it does not release as much humidity.

Agreed, but you could put some legs in there to keep it a 1/8 in abouve the perlite and you wouldnt have any problems with this.

all I saw in that was the words "Ice Cream". What kind of ice cream containers are they?

Size? one gallon.  Flavor chocolate!

Would that not be the same surface area covered as if I put it directly on top of the perlite?  Or are you referring to the surface area covered by the sides of the tub?  If thats the case, I could always make the perlite 7 inches, giving the shrooms 8 inches to grow.  I have plenty of perlite to go around!

Thats defeats the whole purpose of this post, im not trying to make less room for my shrooms to grow, im trying to make more.  I see what your saying though, thats what I planned on doing with my 3 inch trays.

I use 5" of perlite and get great results. If you do that and lift the trays up 1/2" off the perlite, you should have more than enough room for them to grow.

No you aren't understanding our responses. We are referring to the surface area of the perlite. When you lay something on the perlite, that area that is covered will no longer be releasing moisture (humidity).

Follow?

Example:
If you have 18 square inches of perlite.. and cover up 8 square inches with an object, then only 10 square inches will be releasing moisture.

Elemental420's suggestion was to put the tray on top of some stands but to have the stand semi-buried in the perlite so the tray is atleast an 1/8th of an inch off the perlite; which is enough to allow it to release moisture; thus creating humidity.

Without burying the the 5 inch ice cream bucket?  So that leaves 5 inches from the top of the bucket, thats enought hight for the shrooms to grow to their full potential?  I was thinking the average highth of shrooms was more like 6 - 7 inches tall

Growing on cakes or what? Cakes will only give you like 4-5" mushrooms most of the time anyway. Rarely have I seen any over 6" tall from a half-pint cake.

You'll be fine doing that.  You'll make up for the lost surface area of the perlite by your substrate itself releasing moisture as humidity.  A bigger terrarium would work better though.

Damn, I already bought 2 this size, and drilled holes in it for a shotgun style.  I did this because I seen your tek on building a shotgun, and I take your word to be the law lol.

After reading around the forums more, I think I may just turn them both into monotubs.  Would it be ok to line them with a trash bag to seal up all the holes, then just do the whole monotub thing from there?

P.S everyone cross your fingers for my first grow to become a success after 6-7 months of trying to get this stuff right...

You can make a shotgun terrarium in any sized tote you want.  Two different sized terrariums are shown on my DVD.

I have probably spoken with at least 20 individuals this week using shotguns all with the same reported issues of not being able to keep rH up and also bugs getting in.  No matter how much perlite you use...you will likely have rH problems. Taping some of the holes up seems to help lol.  And using a filtertape on the ones you want to leave open will keep bugs out.

I advise against shotgun FC's they have caused nothing but trouble due to having to tape up over half of it to get my rH up in the 90's.  FAE is great but not when you can't maintain humidity.

I would say that the shotgun fc are more trouble then just having fewer larger holes with filter tape over them.

Sounds like that terrarium is plenty big nuff to maintain humidity for that ice cream bucket. The difference between submerging it in perlite or setting it on top of it is zero.  U could just stick w/ your original plan. U can always tape up holes if the humidity is too low. Or u could take a stick and make ridges and valleys in the perlite to increase surface thus raising rh.

Or u eat another bucket of ice cream, put the 2nd bucket on top of the first and tape em together making a double tub.

For advice on hole sizing you could try a search on mini double tub or minimono or mini monotub.

i 100% agree i dont know why certain people still praise a terarrium with 100000000000 holes ......

I am thinking of making my other tub of the same size into a mono.  It has all the holes already for a shotgun, but I can tape them up.  Then cut holes and stuff with polyfil.

Check out my new post, I have lots of pins after just 2 days!
