Ticks are on my dog.
    #10875953 - 08/17/09 01:40 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Like, a whole fucking butt ton of them.

I think she ran through a tick nest, b/c on her right leg at the first spot it bends (near the torso) it looks like there's a tiny baby tick in every available pore spot.  It's pretty gnarly.  Plus there's little ones in random places on her body.

Suggestions?

I'm thinking I'm going to keep her outside until they detach themselves.  They're tiny, so they can't hold much blood, and they're already kinda plump, so they mustn't have far to go until they're full.

So, what should I do?  I've been scratching her where the ticks are to get them off, but there's the random ones all over the body.

Damn camping.  Damn the act to hell.

So what do I do to lose all these little tiny ticks, that cover her front legs, her back legs, her head, and belly?

The worst area I saw was her leg in the front, but upon inspection I see little ones everywhere else, but not as plentiful as on her leg.

Also!  She fights other dogs over toys, I guess to establish dominance, but what should I do to keep her from doing this?  I could keep her away from other dogs, but that's a pain.  How do I train her to stop attacking other dogs over dominance?

Thanks all.

Get those ticks off her man! Lyme's disease is just as much a risk for dogs as it is for humans.  It'll be time consuming but pick those fuckers off.

use tweezers and get as far down towards the head as possible and pull it off with a swift motion. you don't want to leave the head attached. also don't use heat to get them to detach, that is a stupid myth. don't leave them on there!

as far as training her to behave with other dogs, that will take some work. does she react with you when you try to take a toy away? cause that would be the first step. you gotta shut that behavior down man.

honestly, what are you doing with a dog? you should know these things.

Um. Take her to a vet.

Ticks are a host to a multitude of diseases. And yes, humans are susceptible to many of them.

With the toy she holds onto it and tugs back until I take it away, then chases it around my body as I move it away from her.  Then I throw and she chases.

I've been working on the bad spots.  Like, I don't think there's any way to get all of them.  They're literally as small as the end of a pin.

I've been scratching on them to get them to detach.  Their heads are tiny as well, and I don't think they could latch on that good, so as to stay with her and infect her arms.

I put neosporin on them to try to suffocate them into backing out, but the silly dog licked it off.

I'll get some bug spray to see if that'll get them to pull out.

I think they'll drop out soon enough.  At least there are/were 3,000 on her.  Tons.

Ya dude, the small ones are the ones you need to worry about.

Do it yourself, enlist some friends to help, or take your dog to the vet.

Ticks once attached won't suffocate, they get oxygen from blood and can survive being submerged in water for a LONG time.

About the only thing you could do that I can think of besides pick them off is get some bug spray with the highest % deet you can find and just soak the dog with it where the ticks are.  Make sure you give her a good bath after, too.

Don't be irresponsible with your dog!  This could turn into a serious problem.

sounds like you're reinforcing the behavior you dont' want. she fights for the toy so you reward her by letting her chase it. no wonder she doesn't get along with other dogs.

as for the ticks, you should get a shampoo or take her to the vet. they do sound too small and numerous to tweeze.
