How do you keep your straw cake moist?
    #1087421 - 11/26/02 01:06 PM (14 years, 17 days ago)

I have EQ's fruiting on a wheat straw cake and since there is no casing layer, I was curious to know how to keep it from getting too dry. I was thinking that spraying directly h20 and h202 might harm the cake and introduce contams.

Thanks

I haven't tried it yet, but think I have read somewhere that the grower dunked between flushes like a pf cake and had good results. I don't see why that shouldn't work. I'll see if I can find a link.

You know what, I'll probably case it with verm/coir/oyster after the first flush.
That shit looks crazy. Pins coming from everywhere. I'm worried that they won't be able to support themselves as they mature, since there is no casing layer.

I read that someone injected 1000 cc's of straw water in different places on the cake. I think I'd rather case.

I've been growing some 'less interesting' shrooms in the past (Pleurotus Osteratus) and I've always placed the fermentated straw-water solution in 20 liter plastic bags. A bag needs some 20 - 30 small holes through which you inject the strain.

When the little pins start to appear you can make the holes a bit larger.

The tricky part is to maintain steady temperature: inside the bags the temp easily rises over 27 celsius! Better to stick a thermometer in the bag.

I'm planning to grow some shrooms outside in wood logs next summer. That should be interesting...

I've currently got some EQ's growing off of a staw cake as well. What I did is place a rubbermade dishpan in which the cake was colonized into one of the taller sterilite bins, and cover with translucent plastic. I spray down the sides of the sterilite with and H20/H2O2 mist. Seems to keep things happy. Dunking does sound interesting, I think i will give that a shot.

My cat grows B+ on bare straw cakes, too. To rehydrate, he just pulls 'em out and dunks 'em in a big bucket of water with a little bit of H2O2. Cover and leave 'em like that overnight, then drain thoroughly and put 'em back in the terrarium. They fruit like crazy!

here's my rats straw moistening/dunking tek: (some ideas ARE NOT original, credit to joshua and others he can't think of)

to moistnened slow colonizing straws cakes in trays that are maybe 2+ weeks old (some of us DONT follow 1:10 spawn ratio)
*he sprays mycelium directly and goes around rim of tray 2x times with mist nozzle to hydrate deep inside.... make sure you spray pressure is not too high as it will blue (bruise) mycelium growth (which he believes causes mycelium growth to stop, recover and then strart growing again) he also uses a 1:200 bleach to h2o solution (hippie bleach tek) as the straw is open & exposed to contams..

when straw cakes need to be hydrated after casing layer is in place & and ready for fruiting chamber
*make holes about 3/8" or smaller on the bottom of your plastic trays.
*set container in same container but w/ no holes
*fill cold h2o (50 deg F) to about 1/2- 3/4" from bottom of casing layer (this servers as a cold shock too)
*let sit 12-16 hours in such conditions, maybe longer after 3rd or later flushes.
*remove top container h2o will drain through holes you made
* cake is now hydrated, works before 1st flush, and after any other flushes.
* put in fruiting chamber and mist casing as you would regularily...

notes: use verm layer (less 1/4") on bottom straw patties, use 1:200 bleach solution for dunk, never soak the casing layer, pm me for any specifics, dont worry if it pins while your dunking all is ok, my rat is also experimenting with flipping straw patties at the point of colonization so the casing surface is more uniform, anyone w/ experience in this contact me plz...

good day
