Is this really a thread full of newbs bashing shotgun FC's?
Why?

Im not dissing them. Mine worked for me pretty good, high humidity. I have never done a mono though, so I have nothing to compare it to.

I was wondering the same. I believe it to be a combination of not actually trying shotgun FC's and reading old/bad info about people doing it wrong.
I've made 3, different sized shotgun chambers, all kept humidity great.

I have no humidity problems at all when I run my coolmist in the same room as the shotgun terrarium. Thanks RR :P

I have. My conclusion: holes, lots of holes. Here's my mini mono, drilled shotgun style. Next I'm trying a full monotub drilled that way.

Just for that, doc. I think I'll do my next mono inside my old shotgun.

I'd bet it's because there's so much variance in local humidity levels that many noobs have tried copying one model or another and found it don't work for em.
My foaf never bothered putting any holes in his perlite terrariums cuz he never grew more than a few cakes at a time and he opened the thing to look at em so much, he never needed any holes.

ttsk8r said: I advise against shotgun FC's they have caused nothing but trouble due to having to tape up over half of it to get my rH up in the 90's. FAE is great but not when you can't maintain humidity.
This is a common problem. People used to give bad advice to tape up the holes to increase humidity. However, if the terrarium is built per the tek, it will have upper 90s percent humidity. Taping the holes actually lowers humidity along with providing less fresh air, which is the number 1 pinning trigger. You want lots of fresh air, and then you mist to make up for the moisture that evaporates from your substrate. This ebb and flow of substrate moisture content results in the best pinsets possible. The terrarium works on the principle that air flowing up through the cool perlite absorbs the moisture, bringing it into the air above. Tape up the holes and you defeat the purpose, lowering humidity.
The shotgun terrarium theory of operation is explained in this thread. It's similar to a system I helped put in during one of my first engineering jobs after school. The system in Alaska is still in operation to this day, keeping the ground around the pipeline frozen all year without using electricity. It works. RR

I do "tek support" in #cultivation and I have seen countless people come in with problems with "shotgun" FC's. Bugs and low humidity are among the top problems. Then they slap tyvek over all those holes and it works. I don't care how you explain it, it does NOT work and you are causing problems for 100s of people. And then you cause trouble for #cultivation staff. Lose this tek.

Here's some pics of some trays from my VERY 1st grow ... 1st flush and I used a Shotgun. These are 6 quart sterilite trays.
Here's one tray:

Here's another:

The shotgun did its job for me as a newb. I did quickly switch off to 4 teir greenhouse using an ultrasonic humidification system so that I could grow much bigger trays and more of them per FC.
The shotgun does work. Ya just have to keep everything misted.
