Are my jars ready to Inoc?
    #10873118 - 08/16/09 10:09 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

So I've always heard just go the safe way and wait for your jars to cool off overnight before inoculation. Thats what I have always done, however, I am in a situation where it would be great to Inoculate them a bit sooner that I have before. I took them out of the water at 7 PM, so its 5 hours later. The jars are 1/2 pints, and are not warm at all. Does this sound alright to do? Ive also heard if the jars are cool to the touch, there are ready, any thoughts about that? Anyone think this is a good or bad idea? Thanks for looking

iv always herd to let them cool for at least 10-12 hours..just cause the jar dont feel warm dont mean whats inside it is totally cooled off

Care to explain the physics behind that?  BRF has enough water in it, that if the jar is cool, the contents are too.  Remember, water is an excellent heat conductor.  When was the last time you picked up a cool cup of coffee and scalded your lips when you took a sip?

If the jar is lukewarm or even gently warm, it's OK to inoculate. Just don't inoculate if it's still hot.

5 1/2 hours is enough, if you are really on a hurry. The inside of the substrate will be a little warmer obviously, but not that much. If the jar is cool to the touch, you're good.
Go for it!

I let my BRF jars cool over night.. but 24hours never hurts.

Why the rush?
