1/2 Pint vs 1Pint jars
    #1086268 - 11/25/02 11:57 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

I'm hoping to start my first cultures this week (if my spores ever get here.....tap,tap,tap...:)

My question is this, how big a difference in colonization time is it between 1/2 and 1 pint jars. I have a bunch of wide mouth pint jars and a pressure canner already, that's why I am asking. I went over the FAQ but the merits are not clear.

I will be using the brown rice and verm tek. and using a water bath to culture.

Well, the last batch I maid, I had a dozen 1/2 pints and some left over substrate, so I threw it in a pint jar, for shits and giggles. Well my 1/2 pints were cased (about two weeks ago) and they are beginning to pin, the pint jar is just getting done colonizing.

Use a few more cc's of spores so the water runs down the side, it shouldnt take much longer than a half pint.

You could also try this and this since you already have a pressure cooker and pints.

Well it sounds like for speed the 1/2 pints "take the cake" What advantages would a bigger cake have? Considering that you have 100% colonization and no contams. A bigger cake would give,

1. More food
2. Hold more moisture
3. More surface area for fruiting

What has been the general thought from frequent growers?

MLV thanks for the tek links! Cool stuff.
On the tek for the poly filter, do you innoculate through the polyfill or do you mabe use a glove box and take the lids off?

Greed and quantity run into trouble. For myself, a .5 pint is fine. It's fast and I'm not worried about quantity.

you would do it through the side of the filter, this seals right back up.
grains are really your best bet, they provide more food and you can shake the jars at 30-40%, then they usually recover at 100% making them much faster than any brf cake.
Maybe the only down side to grain is it doesnt hold as much water as verm, but this can be corrected a number of ways when you fruit it.

The difference that skikid16 noticed between the two jar sizes was mostly because of the differences in the amount of spore solution used per jar size.

In order to speed colonization you could simply apply more solution in more spots inside the jar.

It should be noted that as the number of innoculation points increases the importance of a careful sterile tecnique becomes greater as well.

Pint jars will take about twice as long dependant upon the amount of innoculant used. Anyway you will be happy with the half pint jars.

If you have a extra jar or two you should try just puting a little cooked rice in the bottom PC and innoculate with 1 or two drops. You can use the jar as incubator and fruiting camber by just removing jar lid replacing the tin foil and placing on a shelf that gets some light. You should be happy with the results from that while you wait for your pints to finnish colonizing.

Remember to only put tinfoil over the jar lids so the can breathe. I used tape once took forever to colonize.

Good luck...Happy trails...

perhaps I should post this on the contams forum but it flows here too.

Too reduce the exposure to contams, could you make only one hole in the edge of a regular canning lid and leave the ring loose enough to spin the lid around leaving the needle in and so it only whent in once?
Is the verm on top packed to tight for this?

good idea, I think it could be done but there is no point for it's almost impossible for contams to enter in the little innoculation holes and take the upper hand on your fungis wich will be sprayed directly in there.

Don't worry about the number of holes in your lids. Four holes is easier and lets the jars breathe a little more. Use foil instead of tape. Just work quickly and cleanly and you should have no problems. In my experience, when properly incubated, pint jars don't take that much longer than 1/2 pints. So if you already have pint jars, just use them.

another way to speed up colonization is to use a whole print when making a syring opposed to 1/3 or 1/4.

Sorry, but that is incredibly idiotic. Why waste the whole print? The problem isn't the number of spores injected, but the amount of spores reaching germinating points. Increasing spores only increases competition. Every time I've done pint BRF jars I only use 2 cc's, colonization time is about 5 weeks. I've experimented with using greater amounts of solution, and have noticed or very negligible decreases in time for full colonization. Stick with 2 cc's.

user exists and fred garvin had the right idea. Breathing is good for the cakes, and a careful sterile tek is not hard at all. Just remember that anything that comes near you needs to be flamed before sticking it into the jar, wear a dust mask and bomb with lysol 3 min before work and intermitently. Clean clothes, no drafts... Just pretend you are a doctor or something operating on your close relative.
