Sounds like your off to a good start. as a first timer you should just take the cakes out when there completly colonized and not case. just put the cakes in some kind of terranuim and add some humidity. they should fruit after a week or so. im no expert so look around in the search engine for what ya need :smile:~

As for casing. Basically what it is is crumbling up your mycellium-colonized substrate underneath a layer of casing material. Casing materials can be anything from peat moss to vermiculite to worm castings. Once you realize what it is, it's simple! The casing layer provides a more natural pinhead-formation enviornment, and therefore yield and potency (maybe) are affected. After casing your mycellium, it will take like oh, at most a week and a half before the mycellium has grown through it and is ready for pinhead formation to occur. This can be achieved by a 5-10 degree drop in temperature or you can just let it happen by itself (might take a little longer).

If you decide to case your first time, don't forget to layer the mycellium at least 2 inches deep and keep the sides of the casing container opaque or it won't work right.

thanks 4 everyone that has replied so far you guy's are cool. the pink flecks have been the same ever since the mycellium grew they haven't changed in appearance at all...PLEASE don't say its contam

Hiya! I've been trying different methods since last June, & casing is the farthest I've gotten. It's easy to do, but I think I'm having problems with it (see "casing failure... HELP!"). Maybe it will give you some ideas, & what to watch for.
So far, Tray #3 is OK...
