Weilii Grow Log
    #10746057 - 07/26/09 10:36 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all!

There is a few firsts for me in this grow. I have previous experience with pf cakes and managed quite a few yields. I took a break for awhile and lent my gear to a friend when I had to move. Of course he let all the cakes I gave him die and I couldn't get a hold of him for 6mo but I finally got all my equip back and I am back into this hobby. I am pretty poor right now so this is something I love to do that is cheap and time consuming.

This is my first grain based grow. I am growing on wild bird seed I purchased from Fred Meyer 6.99 for 25lb which I think is pretty reasonable. This was prepped using Doc's wbs tech.  I inoculated 9 pint jars and 1 quart jar with a Weil's syringe on the 13th and another load on the 14th. Just today they were all at about 60% so I shook them for the second time. It was only about 4 days ago that they were at 5% and I first shook them. There is no contamination to date. Syringe was purchased from a shroomery vendor as part of a Christmas pack and has been in the fridge since then and it is doing just great!

I will try to keep better track and take pictures as I go forward in the process.

My next plan is to run my first tub tech. I purchased 2 54qt bins at wally world today. I am debating as to whether I should run 2 separate tubs and just do two mono or a double tech? I will be making a large spawn run from one of these jars doing a grain 2 grain most likely but the remaining 5qt will go into this bulk attempt. I have found someone on craigslist with hpoo that has been out for 3 years and it's self serve.

Oh also I just picked up one pack of solid plastic lids that I will eventually turn into injector port lids but for now it will just be a poly fill top. What size should I make the hole so I can still put a port in there and any idea where I find these?

07/27/09

Today I drove out to pick up my free hpoo after work. I got there and I can tell I now have access to a lifetime supply of this stuff... I'm not too familiar with the material but it does appear that there is sawdust added to the mix. Will this change or alter my monotub/doubletub? Do I need different supplements?

07/28/09

I sifted through the manure and sawdust and got out as much as I could. Maybe 1/10th of what I gathered was usable. I will try to get coffee grounds for free from Starbucks and maybe purchase some coir since the jars look about 4-7 days out. The weather has been about 100 degrees on average so no incubation chamber I just stuck them in a cupboard. I keep reading as much as I can and keep out for easy to get hpoo as that seems one of the top ways but I have seen some amazing pins from coffee coir combo.

I called a local place said they sell coir for about 13$ and 4kilo so about 8.8lbs. I will try to do some reading to figure out this new substrate so I can be ready. I am a little bummed about not trying hpoo but that's ok it will be interesting to learn about this.

07/31/09

Got a giftcard for Starbucks today from work. Grounds for Gardens is the name of their program where they bag and save grounds for eco conscious folks or poor shroom growers like meh. I got a drink and a big bag with about 35lbs of coffee. I doubt I will need all this but any extra can go to some experiments.

I opened the cupboard to check on the jars and here is what I see

I am not very familiar with grains but I still think it might need just a few more days for it to get nice and thick? Maybe I don't. I know I may need to refrigerate some cause I don't get paid till Wed and I still need coir. I may use one of the jars to make either liquid mycelium or do a grain 2 grain. I'm not familiar with either but both seem relatively simple to do. I still have about 30 empty good sized jars so I figure I should continue producing while I can.

08/03/09 & 08/04/09

So today I am running a grain to grain transfer on quite a few jars. I was very meticulous about my clean technique. I had everything cleaned and sprayed with lysol before I started. I soaked a paper towel in rubbing alcohol to sterilize the spoon before starting the xfer and I tried to make no contact while transferring the grains. I think it is important to note I used Moe's oven tek for my sterile area to do my work. I have heard many different things about this tek but I have personally had a lot of success with no contams!

I used about a quarter of the pint jar. The remainder I mixed with 2 pints of coffee for an experiment. I figured with such a good mixture ratio my chance of contams is pretty low. This is just an experiment until the 5th when I get paid and I will go get my coir.

My pressure cooker occasionally gets over the 15 mark somewhere near 20 -- for future reference do i adjust my time of pc based on this?

Also I need to create my double tub tonight or tomorrow but I only have a 3/4 spade bit. I was considering just doing 3 of the 3/4 holes evenly spaced. Anyone with tub knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Much love and any help or suggestions are welcomed!

Loosen or remove the foil.  Your pics won't expand so I can't tell any thing from them.

Once I loosened the foil the jars sped up. I did a whole new set of jars with a grain 2 grain xfer method using moes oven tech. I will post a writeup with pics soon I am beat after prepping all that grain and running the oven in 100 degree temps with no a/c and only a fan :frown:

Moe's oven tek. I have had 100% success rate with this and no contams.

Got my coir today about 10lb for 12.50 this was the best price I could find. Lot's of recipes talk about using just a brick of coir so how would i go about measuring this???

I didn't get a response in time so that's what I essentially did. I read online that the average brick is 650g so I estimated that on a bathroom scale. I don't know if any of you have ever broken up a block of coir but it's not friggin easy. I ended up using my spade bit to drill holes and break it off in chunks. I put it in my assembled bin. I already covered it so I won't have any pics for awhile. Most tech said leave it be for 10 days so thats the plan.

Today I checked on my jar's and I am once again at 5% growth but I already foresee a delay on my jars. I really do need to be more careful to only fill the jars about 3/4 but instead the grain I transferred is growing on the top so it will not be able to reach the bottom. This is kind of a disappointment but a good lesson because I chose WBS for it's quicker grow time than cakes due to being able to speed up growth by breaking apart thus spreading the mycelium through the jar.

I checked on the mini green tub of a small coffe/mycelium(wbs) mixture and it was already showing good growth on the top. I designed this so I might get practice with casing before I do it on the big tub. It's highly likely that I'm making out the casing layer out to be much more complicated than it really is but the first time I tried it I don't think the PH was right or something because the whole thing just died :/

I still haven't messed with the big tub but soon enough... when I take my first peek I will promise to take pics!

I made a quick batch of lc today. One was a weil's jar with a couple grains. The only reason I didn't mind the grain is due to the fact that I will be using it very shortly. The other is a cyanofibrillosa -- a species totally new to me that I will hopefully putting together a much better grow log on

Here is completed project

Before casing

I didn't have anything on hand for casing so I ended up using an organic soil that I had in the shed. How long is casing supposed to incubate for? I've read of people incubating after casing and some just going straight to light cycle.

Of all my project I have had two contams. One was from a g2g jar. The other was less about clean tech and more about container choice. The container wasn't really sealed and coffee is more likely to contam imo

EPIC FAIL

So out of 40 some odd jars only 1 was contamed. My lc are def ready. I am gonna try to trade for larger jars rather than small ones (I purchased for cakes.) I think it is just much easier to avoid contams without going between so many units and less shaking jars for me hehe. I finally drilled my holes in the plastic lids which I'm trying to transition over to and I drilled about the size of a pencil right in the center. I figure later I can still add injection port but for now i'll try tyvek/polyfill. Is that a big enough size? Any help and directions would be appreciated and for those of you reading I hope you learn something from my mistakes hehe.

I am seeing knots pop up in small random spots is it worth opening to try to even out casing layer or just call it good and see what's up?

you probably should have even'd it out the first time. you might be able to case it again im not to sure on that tho.
just fruit it and make sure you have good humidity.

Plenty of hum in the tub as you can tell from the pics I occasionally tilt it so there's no buildup.

Still no pins since casing. Have a fan blowing right at it but my casing is a bit lower than the holes so I decided to take out just a bit of the polyfill all over the container. There ends up being so much humidity you can't see inside and a lot builds up on top so I have to tilt to keep from dripping onto the casing. Hope I made the right choice.

Perhaps I'm being too eager...

Before I compost this guy is there any last words? I see trich and cobweb...

I thought tub tech was pretty hard to mess up and it looks like I did so I NEED some help!!! Tips idea suggestions for next time? I thought about trying two monos instead next time... the casing I used was just a soil but it was still around 6.6ph and I sterilized it. I just dunno?!?
