Rhizomorph / Cottony
    #10857609 - 08/14/09 02:38 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I can't seem to get any rhizomorphic mycelium.  Is this a definite sign of senescence with P.C.?  Is my only option for growing ropey mycelium strain isolation?  I haven't used agar yet and am wondering if it's even possible to get a nice rhizomorphic growth started with multi-spore?  Thanks for taking the time.  Sincerely, The Tomentose King.  *sigh*

i grow 4 strains started from 4 syringes(no isolation)and they all show rizamorophic growth stretching up the side of the container when colonizing. some more than others

I noticed the difference in myc action in jars vs. outside. The jars and 2 bags were the cottony kind of growth. The cakes did their usual thing and fruited, but the bags were mixed in an outdoor substrate and they formed the finger myzo action.

I've seen plenty of pictures of jars though, that had the finger action.

I dooon't know why.:hillbilly:

Either way though, They still made boomers.

rhyzomorphic growth is usualy desired but its not nessesarily a sign of bad things.

You may not see it also depending on how much mycelium is growing ontop of each other. Myc can often look contteny if you have lots of strains growing over each other.

It also depends on the ginetics. I have Hawaii and burma, both which i have been lucky to have some great ginetics. On pf cakes, after about a week, it starts growing thick rhyzos from the the entire edge of the first cotteny growth. giving me 50%+ of strong rhyzo growth.

You dont need to isolate to get nice rhyzo growth, though isolating will give more consistant results.

Thanks for the replays. It's odd that a buried grow gets a million replies and this only three. I DO appreciate the responses that I've gotten. I guess that I can always use Google or Bing. This has probably been handled on this forum years ago...

You're joking right?  :banghead:

Everyone who has the ability to answer this question for me with any authority, surely knows the difference between ropey and cottony mycelium!

If you like to see the pretty pictures here's a pic.

This      is      cottony      mycelium.

I get what you're saying. I apologize for getting bitchy. I'm frustrated. 80% of the crap that's on this site is being "debunked". Which pisses me off because I joined this site to LEARN. It's also a pain in the ass to try and help noobs and find out that the things that you've learned are crap. So NOW you are giving out bad info. Which will just put off noobs who otherwise might have gotten heavily into shrooms, and not just the magic variety. I spend almost $50.00 a book and still have some god damned questions.

Anyway... thanks for complementing my jars. I am really very good ad growing mycelium on grain, WBS. G2G transfers are simple, LESS than 1% contams. That's without a laminar.

But I can't fruit to save my life! I'm going to put my latest jars, (which showed growth at day three, 0 contams), into a thirty-three gallon fish tank. We'll see.

I can't find a Martha anywhere. I might by a small portable greenhouse. It would be nice to be able to put a few small, (18") logs into it.

Anyway, sorry, and thanks.

Having only visible tomentose growth without rhizomorphs isn't necessarily a bad thing with Ps. cubensis If you used MS inoc, then it's 100% guaranteed not to be senescence, unless you did several generations of G2G.

Genetics can play a vital role in determining whether or not the mycelium will produce fruitbodies. If you've done several G2G transfers, and none of the resulting colonies will produce fruits, then it's possible, although unlikely, that all of the substrains which dominated your original colony were non fruit-producing. I say this is highly unlikely, as the substrains which are capable of fruiting are generally more aggressive proliferators.

Anyway, you didn't really give a whole lot of details, so it's hard to comment, but I would recommend attempting to fruit the jars.

As far as the question of rhizomorphic mycelium from MS, it's almost an exception when it doesn't happen where Ps. cubensis is concerned. If by "P.C." you meant Pan cyans, then you're probably not going to get rhizomorphic mycelium at all.

I meant  P. cubensis.  You have actually cleared it up for me.  I thought that a "strain" would experience senescence and pass it down through the spores:suicide:

I understand how it works now.  Makes sense about G2G's.  I was actually making it harder than it is.  Thank you a billion!

Nope, senescence has nothing to do with genetics. Thinking of it in terms of human growth, after a certain amount of aging, the human body becomes less capable of performing vital functions at an optimal capacity. This tends to become more pronounced with age, and after a certain point the human body is incapable of sustaining necessary biological processes for life.

It's the same thing for mushroom mycelium. After you force the same mycelium to continue growing time and time again through transfers, it begins to lose the ability to sustain itself, leading to very weak mycelium.
