You could innoculate using already grown mycelium but that would require an innoculated cake so just buy the syringe you cheap bastard (just fuckin joking man).

I have heard of an eye dropper being used, but I haven't tried it myself.

I remember reading some tek where you just scrape some spore print onto the substrate.. It's in the "Grow/Find" section somewhere. Sorry I couldn't be more specific. Sounds a bit hit & miss to me though..

yep, you can just scrape a bit of sporeprint off into the jar.  actually works pretty well (i've used that method myself ), it just takes a few more days to colonize.

but you should just go and buy some empty syringes!  they're about $1 a peice

you can't just go and buy them though. Not unless you have a prescription. You could order them, but then you have to wait for them to get to your house. Last time I needed some I had to resort to convincing the guy at a mom and popo pet store to sell me some syringes. They were only 3cc too so I had to make a ton of em. Next time I went back for more there was a different guy and he wouldn't sell me any without a prescription.

Yeah, before some kind people sent me syringe pins, I innoculated jars with an eye dropper, and a drinking straw attached to a syringe to act as the needle.

I sterilised them as best I could by pulling boiling water in and squirting out a number of times (I used water that had been boiled, covered, and was now cooling for the drinking straw method, so as not to warp the straw.)

And I had no probs with contams. That's using BRF and boiling the jars as I don't have a PC. HTH.

yeah i know, wtf is with that anyways?  i ordered mine over the net   but a lot of people say you can go to an animal feed store and buy them (try and get 10cc syringes with 16/18/20 guage needles)

I bet those people think you will shoot up with the needles or something.

When innoculating with a print use your oven. Turn it on and pull out one of the drawer things and work on that. The heat from the oven will destroy airborne contaminants.

ok, well you see perhaps i can steel my schools eye dropper, its very thin, so it can go through the substrate properly. Now the other method of scraping the spores on, would i just scrap the spore print, and then rub it on the inside of the jar without the substrate in it, or with it in?

Try to find a feed store. Most carry syringes, and big fuckers too. You dont need a prescription to give your horse a shot;)

I used to inoculate by flecking spores right onto the substrate in a glovebox and really didn't have any problems with contam with most of my prints. Somehow a few of them were badly contaminated so I got me some agar. Instead of just making syringes out of the spores, or flecking directly onto the substrate, I would fleck the spores on some agar agar under sterile conditions. After it grew out a bit, I would then take a small piece of the mycelium and transfer it to another petri dish of agar with a sterile scalpel until an isolated culture was obtained. Then I would take that final mycelium and drop in a dish of sterile water and suck up with a syringe.

Voilah, mycelium syringes! Glovebox is a necessity for working with agar however but thats no big deal to make.

Oh shit that's right you said without a syringe, well you could just scrape up the mycelium culture in the glovebox with a scalpel and drop in the jar, or you could just fleck spores, but I would definately invest the time in making a glovebox. Definately worth the time IMO.

I know for a fact you can get them at local feed stores. I get mine at a chain called tractor supply which just carries like garden equipment and all types of pet foods and a large animal vet section. They have premade syringes with mediicine and have all types of empty syringes and needles. I never got the courage to go up and buy them though just becuase i dont look like a farmer type at all. They need to invest in security  :frown:

I get mine at the chemist.
Obviously here we have less junkies I`m guessing.
So I just tell them I use them to innoculate jars of substrate to grow mushrooms.
They give me a confused look and just point me to the syringes and needles.
Now when I go in I just go and fetch my own from the despensary, no one helps me any more. Thye pretty much know what I want by now.
