Yes, I'm sure most everyone has felt like dying, which is why its pretty well understood by people like psychiatrists or psychologists who treat individuals who feel like that. You'll only get locked up if they feel they have a legitimate reason to believe you are actually in immediate danger of harming yourself or others, and simply feeling like dying in a time isn't enough of a reason for that to happen.

Thank you, I'm sick of these bullshit claims that never seem to be backed up and are contradicted by pretty much all the major psychology sources out there.


From what I've seen, beliefs common in an individual's culture are not cause to diagnose mental illness like dellusions et cet.  This obviously seems a reasonable guideline, since the value of such a thing is pretty crappy as an indication of mental illness if its just a reflexively repeated truth.

No, not for having thoughts - we all have thoughts. The Baker Act is for the involuntary hospitalization of someone who has a plan to harm self and/or others. There is also a 'duty to warn,' if someone discloses that they're gonna take the family out with them. One can be Baker Acted for up to 72 hours of observation, but they often release people the same day or the next morning after an emotional impulse has abated somewhat. It's really about keeping someone from trying to fix a temporary problem with a permanent solution - or protecting others. It's not "institutionalized" either - just 72 hours maximum, unless they've lost it completely and need to be restrained, medicated, stabilized. There really aren't any 'back ward' Bedlams any more. It was during Reagan's administration that those places were emptied, and the mentally ill were dumped on the streets. In Miami, at the same time, the Mariel boat lifts dumped Castro's criminals and mentally ill here to create that inimitable Miami Cuban-American 'la vida loca' culture.
