First Grow B+ WBS Spawn to Coir in Buckets
    #10832423 - 08/10/09 10:54 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Let me begin by saying I am a first time grower, and after SEVERAL months on this board, I decided to give it a shot. The more and more I read, I determined that the WBS method would be the best choice compared to starting on cakes because it didn’t seem too complicated. So from the beginning I used Doc's WBS tek to pressure cook one small jar of WBS to see if I could get the procedure right. After that, I noc’d it up with 2 ml of a B+ syringe. It colonized perfectly so I know I did everything correctly. From there I used docs wbs tek to prepare 6 quart jars and two small jars, one with wbs and one with water to be sterilized. When they were ready, I used agars grain lc tek to noc up all my jars. I simply got one syringe and took water from the sterile water jar and squirted it in the colonized jar a few times. I used the mycelium laden water to noc all my jars. When I finished I squirted the remaining mycelium water back into the sterile water jar to see if it would colonize any. The jars colonized incredibly fast and were extremely healthy.

I would recommend this procedure to start your jar because not only does it give you practice at pressure cooker use it guarantees you can’t mess up all your quart jars because you are using mycelium water instead of spores. By the way I did this all under a still air box using proper sterilization techniques.

Here you can see all the jars I did. The small one in the front left is the remains of the wbs jar that I used to do the grain lc, as you can see it recolonized. The little one in the front middle is another small jar I will be using to start my next batch in the same manner that I did the grain lc, process never ends, grain lc is amazing. The small yellowish jar is the water that I noc'd up with the remaining mycelium water... don't know if it is contaminated or not, input appreciated.

Once they were fully colonized, I decided to use Otto’s Bucket o fungus to spawn them to straight coir and coffee. I used large_dose’s bulk coir pasteurization but didn’t have any verm on me so I went without it. Both of these methods seemed easy and effective, and if you are a beginner I would strongly recommend at least reading Otto’s bucket tek. I used a few different bucket sizes to experiment. I even used the remains of the soaked wbs from my grain lc jar which recolonized to spawn into a tiny mini tub. I split up the jars to spawn two quarts each to the 3 buckets, including the one big bucket which I sort of modified using polyfill in two big holes near the top (experiment). I put the buckets in my basement and covered them with a sleeping bag and let them sit for days

One of the buckets before I covered the holes with micro pore tape.

A glimpse of all the buckets I used. All made from 6 1/2 quarts of spawn, 1 brick of coir, and 1 quart of coffee grinds.

After about 5 days they are colonizing very well but still need some time to fully colonize.

See, even the small blue tub that I only put the remains of the small grain lc in colonized... amazing. Below is the big bucket after I put the polyfill in.

Still determining if I want to case, I have read a few posts that claim it doesn't help too much when dealing with straight coir. Input appreciated...

I will be checking on them in a few more days to fruit, but until then I will be willing to answer any questions or comments until I update it. Like I said this is my first grow and it was surprisingly easy so don't be scared to try wbs first. Also, if you noticed I did a lot variations and experimenting so next time I can be more effective, cause that's what it's all about. Thanks to everyone on shroomery you have been more than helpful, and a special thanks to Doc, large dose, agar, and Otto for the incredible tek's. More to come soon.

****** UPDATE******

Not much has changed after a few days, just took a peek at the progress and here is the update.

Pics of the progress of the first white bucket.

Pic of the small blue tub

Pic of the second white bucket

And last but not least, 2 pics of the large orange bucket

Please let me konw what you think. Im pretty anxious because its my first grow and I need to know when they are ready to fruit... you think it's time? Or should I case? Opinions and advice greatly appreciated. Once again thanks for all your help.

I'm doing a grow identical to you, except I got blue buckets and I have no GE holes drilled.

I'm going to just drill the holes, and cover them with micorpore tape.

3 just above the substrate lever, and maybe 2 at the top of the bucket.

Well the plastic on top are shower caps that I got from the dollar store ( 10 for $1). Just like in Ottos bucket tek I am going to pull them up when they are ready to fruit, and put a fan on a timer on them along with a light. The shower cap almost acts like a lung, you can even pull it up and push it down several time to force air into it. Plus it keeps the humidity perfect, haven't had to spray them once.

Yea I drilled two holes close to the substrate layer and four around the top, except for the big bucket, two down low and two big ones up top stuffed with polyfill. The larger buckets were actually cheaper so if they work out better I will purchase more.

Anyone able to tell if my mycelium water in the jar is shot or not? It has looked the same for weeks.

how long have they been colonizing?? and iv heard that you can just take the poly out. 2 weeks coling is what you want. so they really get a hold of the sub and use all the nutritional resources to its full potential.

they have been colonizing since last wednesday, so a little over a week. So I should take the polyfill out soon? Should I do anything to the smaller buckets/tubs that only have micropore tape? So I'm just under two weeks... wait a little longer even though they are small tubs? Thanks for all your help and yes, I will try and bring them off the floor... good advice.

yeah I would wait the full 2 weeks. I know its hard but most of the time they wont even pin for a week if fruited after only a week of coling umm I said I heard and thats about it. I see people just drill a bunch of holes in there monos like you would a fc with perlite. If your big holes arenit right at your sub lvl 2 or so inches above then I would say go for it .( this is what I do ) or you could leave it losely stuffed with poly . maybe someone will jump in with there opinion to help  you decide what is best. good luck.

oo yeah a good sign that there ready to fruit and that they are chowing down on the sub is it will pull away from the sides of your tub a lil.

i just did this and flushed around 2 oz out of 2 buckets before they quit producing.  my advice is for you to case it. get some verm and peatmoss maybe even some lime to raise the pH (not necessary though) then after you SPRINKLE your casing down you might want to mist it once a day or so untill you see pins

so if i choose to case it, I should prepare my mix then sprinkle it over and then start misting right away and fruit or case and mist then wait til first signs of white start popping up then fruit? I read the link about casing coir vs non casing by large dose and he doesnt advise against non casing... maybe i should case one of the white buckets (because they are the same) and see the difference?
