The deadly devil plant growing in Greenstead

3:00pm Thursday 13th August 2009

Maggy Scobie and her granddaughter Kirsten Scobie, ten, with the devil’s weed

A DEADLY hallucinogenic Amazonian plant has been discovered on a footpath where children play.

The datura stramonium plant, or devil’s weed as it is also known, was found by a woman in a pathway on Greenstead yesterday just a few steps from her front door.

Margaret Scobie, 56, said she was stunned to find the plant, which has been known to cause death, seizures and comas, by the side of the public footpath outside the home she shares with her daughter, Michelle, 36, and grand-daughter, Kirsten, ten.

Mrs Scobie said: “I think it must have been there a while, but I hadn’t noticed it until my daughter said it looked like the one we had seen on the TV a few days earlier.

“It is so dangerous and I have three grandchildren who come and visit. There are so many children who play out here, especially during the summer holidays. One of them could easily put it in their mouth or play with it and I heard it can be deadly.”

Daughter, Michelle, immediately called Colchester Council, but was unable to speak to anyone until the end of the day.

The family was then told there was no one to remove the plant, as everyone had gone home, and it would be removed first thing today.

The tropane alkaloids in the plant can cause powerful visual and audio hullucinations in those who eat it and leave them in a trance-like or delirious state which can last for several days.

The plant can also cause seizures and death.

IT has been found in other parts of East Anglia in recent days, including Witham and Ipswich.

I heard that fat people can have seizures, strokes, and even die.

Looks like that mother is NOT doing a very good job keeping up with her daughters eating habits.

Ka-pwnd.

her grandchildren could easily put it in their mouth and play with it? yea that weed looks real enticing. it has spikes like a thistle weed, no way would i even pay attention to that when i was little. the only reason i could assume a child would go near it to play with it is if the parents tell them to pull weeds out of the landscaping.
and what about all the nightshade plants and jimson weeds in the backyard---don't let your kids play outside! there is too much nature!

omg... a whole day before a CITY worker can come pull this weed out of the ground. i can see why the family couldnt just cut it out themselves though, they might touch the sap and have a seizure, or worse, hallucinate.

plants like poison ivy (if eaten) will cause a severe rash to develope everywhere the leaves touch going down and all through out your system -
good chance of your throat and airways swelling shut - similar effect if exposed to poison ivy smoke as well - its even risky removing it in the winter as well.

there is something called "parenting" that (if done properly) will actually make your kids a lot safer -
they wont just eat random plants they find growing on the ground for one.

Also - a good parent will actually look around and check for anything questionable at all in their yard before allowing a child so young that they just might try to injest a unknown plant or something of that nature - first and foremost, to go and play.

checking for things such as rattlesnakes, birds of prey, suspicious vehicles , Poisonous plants, etc and keeping and eye on them - Parenting.

its a shitty trip as far as i can tell. i've read enough trip reports that i lost interest in trying it. its not as deadly as they make it seem in this article i know a few kids who tripped on it and ended up in the hospital but only because they were out of their minds and they were just given benzos. there are better drugs. just do what ram dass did and drink LSD for 2 weeks :awesome:

Oh noes, nature can be harmful!
Hell, our city hall has Brugmansia (nearly identical to D. stramonium except it's more tree-like instead of shrubby) planted out front. Not 'grew there and we're going to cut it down shortly', no, it was planted intentionally.
And yet, good luck trying to find salvia around here.
Mind-boggling.

i'd be willing to bet that datura can be found in just about any residential area in the sf bay area. i see it all the time. sometimes i see it growing around day care centers and such; not many people know about it i guess.

If I was a kid a would have stayed away from that, let alone felt compelled to force myself to eat it.  It looks like those regular spikey weeds that grow everywhere, and I hated those.

Also, why the hell is this news?
