humidity
    #1085258 - 11/25/02 08:37 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

i have a fogger at my house (i'm on college campus, two hours from home) and i was wondering if that would provide proper humidification of a 10 gal. terrarium. i am not sure if i will case the cakes or just put them in a dual chambered terrarium. this is my first time and i would like to get results. even if they are sub-par. everyone always says to start at the bottom and work up when you have a better understanding.
but, back to the fogger. for those of you who don't know what it is, it puts out fog similar to dry ice in water. i was thinking that in a 10 gal aquarium, it would provide enough moisture (possibly too much) for the beauties to grow.
the more i read, the more i want to case. it doesn't seem to be that much more trouble to case than it is to just let the cakes go through puberty in the chamber.
if there is anyone out there who has tried to use a fogger for proper humidity please respond.
thanks for the help shroomies.

How does it produce fog, isn't it just chemical, not actual humidity?

the fogger has some sort of electrical current running through it. it's not one of those smoke generators in the clubs and stuff. here is a link to a website i found that sells them. http://www.mainlandmart.com/foggers.html
here is a pic from the site displaying the type of fog generated.

hope this helps with my description.

I guess you could use it, but I really don't know, I use perlite.

I live in a climate with literally zero humidity. Do you think the perlite alone will work?

The fogger will work. It is basically an ultrasonic humidifier. Just set it up on a timer and don't leave it running all the time.

I live in the same climate, and until I started using perlite I had nothing but dried up cakes.

When I fruit cakes I use an 18 quart Stearlite tub. I put damp perlite in trays on the bottom of the tub and place the cakes on inverted plastic yogurt container lids (they're just the right size). The cakes & lids then sit right on the perlite.

For air exchange I cut a small hole in the tub and run a plastic air tube into the chamber. At on end of the tube is an aquarium air pump - at the other is an air stone submerged in a glass of water with a splash of h2o2.

Natural light comes in through a window that I cut in the lid and covered with plexi-glass.

Between the perlite and the fish pump my humidity stays nice and high, and I only have to fan once a day or so. Works great!
