Desiccant in the UK

does anyone know where to get hold of some desiccant in the uk? I spent the whole of today trying different hardware stores in my area such as B&Q, Homebase etc etc. I asked the sales staff and they said they knew what I was after but they didn't stock it and had no idea where I could get some from. Any help would be much appreciated

you can get it at woolworths if there is one near you, i would avoid the apple and strawberry sented ones but they have the regular stuff as well. (CaCl2)
if you have got lots to dry it's well worth air drying to get most of the water out and finish with the CaCl2. good luck

Goodies in the UK [Re: tank]

I had fun and games looking for all my goodies in London:
Jars - Bonne Mamann jam ?1.19 in supermarkets Vermiculite, perlite, peat moss, lime, casing trays, max-min thermometer - garden centres oyster shell, coco coir, aquarium pump and tubing - pet shops BRF - Holland & Barrett ?1 timer - B&Q ?6 pressure cooker - ?15 at Argos. spores - $1 or 1euro a print at the Free Spore Ring, or about ?10 per syringe from Smart Botanics, both in Holland.
The only things I had problems with (still not happy) were 'Lysol' antibacterial spray - I settled for dettol spray - and hydrogen peroxide - I settled for the 3% red 10-10 contact lens solution (is this strong enough, anyone?), both in Boots.
I think us UK growers are in a real minority, and should stick together. Any more of us out there, with tips? Anyone got a better source of H2O2, if you think I need it?

I had fun and games myself in Sheffield (UK)
Jars - Bonne Mamann French Conserve jam ?1.19 in supermarkets which are slightly larger than the normal recommended size (370 gram I think) or Morrisons supermarkets sell 4 tapered drinking glasses (340 gram) for 99p!
Vermiculite and perlite - B&Q ?3.99 each per 10 litre bag
Peat moss, lime, max-min thermometer - garden centres
Oyster shell, coco coir - pet shops
Casing trays - Aluminium Diposable Trays from supermarkets (I got mine from Macro in bulk V cheap)
BRF - Holland & Barrett 99p for 500g
Grow chamber - Large, transparent plastic storage boxes ?1 from Pound Land or just about any other Pound shop. Spores - 1 euro a print from FSRE (Highly recommended!)
H202 (hydrogen peroxide) Hydroponics grow shops.
Syringes - I buy mine in bulk off the net. These guys sell worldwide and they only charge ?6.19 for 100 10ml syringes complete with 1 1/2" needles. You can't get cheaper than this !

I couldn't find Lysol spray anywhere either but a mild water and bleach solution in a spray bottle works.
There! Hope that helps us UK growers. We do seem to be in the minority!

Buy kitty litter. Look for the advertised, '100$ silica crystals' or something along those lines. The thing I dont know about em is if you have to 'recharge' them or not, if so how.

Can I suggest; rather then buying them jars from sainsburys and having to scoop the jam out and pay + ?1 for each jar, go to Wilkinson and buy a 6 pack of drinking glasses, if you looked there should be just right size ones, they normally cost ?3 for 6, but I went on special offer and got 6 for ?2

yeah you can use dettox spray as a substitute for lysol. i work with it, works fine. also, the flash antibacterial wipes are great for wiping down jars and surface areas before doing anything.
at the big boots you'll be able to find hydrogen peroxide. it's a bit expensive, 89p for just a small brown bottle while back home in the states it's like 10cents for a big ass bucketfull They only sell hydrogen peroxide through the pharmacy, it's not over the counter here (which is what i don't get). So just go up to the pharmacist and ask for h202 they'll be able to give you an overpriced bottle of it hehe

also, if you guys have a john lewis or waitrose near you, they sell these tupperware like containers that come in 1/2 pint, 1 pint and 3 pint sizes. they're only like ?1.00, ?1.25 and ?1.50 for these containers and they're pressure cookable. The half pints are good for cakes and the 1-3 pints are pretty good for using grains...

i got my first lot of brown rice flour in holland & barret, but i found you can get it a less than half the price (?1.20 for 1.5kg) in indian shops, pleanty of them about in any uk city. it is used alot in india cooking. it is sold as rice flour not BRF but the nutritial info on the back seems pretty much the same and it has worked well when i use it.
keep it going uk shroomers.
p.s. a good air dryer can be made with a shoe box with a computer fan at one end and a hole at the other, gets the bulk of the water out in a day or two.

Look in the automotive stores/isles for driveway salts for melting ice. They should say "Calcium Chloride" somewhere on them.
That's what you need.

I don't know if you can get this in the UK, but I have been telling every one of my discovery a few weeks ago. You can get cat litter that has nothing in it but silica sand(dessicant). It is pretty cheap compared to getting it from lab supplies. I believe it should be about 15 pound for about 2 kilos. Just incase you have no idea what it will look like, it is a bag of kitty litter that looks like little plastic balls instead of clay that is the stuff you want.

Its reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who had to buy a shitload of jam that I dont much like to get hold of some jars. Have you all seen this UK site http://shroomtek.co.uk/ ? Its not the most comprehensive site but it would be nice to see it grow. Its about time we had a decent UK site for us walmartless folk.
