having to work in a destructive society
    #10837853 -

how do you come to terms with having to work and enable this destructive society... you see people go to college so they can get some kind of job, being a fat cat banker or greedy CEO.. they see news of all this corruption and instead of being mad are secretly thinking, one day that will be me... even teachers and truck drivers are polishing the wheels of society. then if you don't do it, people tell you to get a job and be a productive member of society, which is the stupidest line. something not quite right about all of this... guess that's why they waged war against psychedelics

Work to better yourself and the world as best you can. Don't fall into the trap of defeatism because it will just make you unproductive.

yeah I am a bit defeatist but I never found any reason not to be, I feel that it is all a destructive cycle, the only promies is if you enable it, it won't go away (so will be there for our children's children), and we don't have any choice.. butw e can see how destructive the herd/consumerism society is and only gets worse. guess ibelong in the 60's before the us commited cultural genocide against the hippies

hippies still exist. If you don't like consumerism you should try and limit your consumption as much as possible. Then you can feed your excess cash or energy into more worthwhile pursuits.

Any job you do is worth doing the best you can. If you're going to live life, do it right..

You don't have to work hard for the sole purpose of gaining wealth and power. You can do it simply because you want to be the best you possible.

Or just work until you make out your own alternative. That's what I do! I spend lots of time visualising my ideal future and how I would like to live my life. When you get that down, all work becomes steps toward achieving that goal.

You belong in the 60's? Do you belong in reality?

Dimension's advice is bang on. Read it again and start thinking about it.

First of all, you don't have control over any person but yourself, so if you are sad about living in a destructive society, then you need to begin with changing your own life. Be the best person that you can be, and be better to those around you. From what you have written, it sounds like you look down on most of those around you, and so you need not look any further to find one of the biggest problems in our society.

Believe it or not, it is possible to do good in this world, and it is possible to make a difference. Things will never be the way you want them to be (not while you're still alive at any rate) so give up that delusion; it's counter-productive to the extreme. Nevertheless, if you know your history, you will see that things can and do change for the better when there are courageous people who teach by example.

The answer to your question is as simple and as hard as they come. The path to a better society is the path to a better you. Get on it.

I disagree, I think there is no hope, there will never be a better world or society because the problem is internal in hman beings. The human life is only about manipulating, controlling, and brainwashing. just look at families out there, politics, schools, healthcare, education system, police system.. it's all the same threads of control going through them. why else do you think psychedelic are banned? they are trying to control the insights they give people... how can there be hope if these things is wired in us... I agree that we can choose to be different individually, that is what I want to do, but it is like vegans, they are against cruelty to animals so they decide to not eat meat. What can someone who is against humanity and human history do? we still have to pay rent, get a job, etc... and feed the machine... or we can become homeless bums, crazy hermits, or commit suicide, we are in hell.

Choose a path that allows you to better the world. I want to earn a P.h.D in Pharmacology so I can further medical research, esp. in the area of psychoactives.

It's too bad you feel this way but I urge you to keep an open mind that there is a way out of this mess. I felt the same as you for most of my life (I've been a deep thinker since I was a young child) and it has been in recent years that I started to see the truth of a bright future ahead. It's really tough to see because of how bad things are right now. But there is a pattern to history, and it is a good one. Just too slow.

One thing to remember is that as a member of western society you are among the richest people in the world. It's a very privileged position to be in but also a glutinous one if you don't respect it. A small bit of the money you make working in the machine can make a huge difference in the third world. You can literally save lives, a lot of lives. Take the money from the machine and redistribute it.

Quit taking yourself so seriously and just get a job.

I get the feeling that this nonsense is fueled by a shortage of funds on your part.

You haven't been productive, so you call yourself a martyr of sorts in order to keep from admitting to yourself that you're having a pity party.

I am proud of what I contribute to America and I don't give a shit what you or anyone else thinks about it.

That's very true!

Quote:
What can someone who is against humanity and human history do? we still have to pay rent, get a job, etc... and feed the machine... or we can become homeless bums, crazy hermits, or commit suicide, we are in hell.

There is such a thing as a middle ground. People dissatisfied with how things work have been known to extract themselves from it and form small communities all over the world. What the system wants though, is to make us think in a binary way: living in the system or becoming a crazy ermit.

That cannot be further from the truth!

For example, when I was in Barcelona in may, I had the opportunity to visit a small community that has taken over an old building that used to serve as a asylum. They have been there for 20 years now and they are fully self-sufficient.

It's right in the middle of Barcelona! And every sunday people can come and visit them and take a look at how they manage to run things.

There are communities like that all over the world! So what I'm trying to say is that if you truly feel sick of the way you live, there are alternatives that offer a lot more than spending the rest of your life in the wild by yourself. We have to make it happen! Find some people that already do or start another one of those!

Will power can make a lot of things happen. It can show people that other ways are possible.

Damn straight Swyfty!

Also, seriously, percy, grow the fuck up.  I've thought those same things before.  Life is only hell because you make it that way.  Don't you think if we got rid of the system of control we have right now, then forgot about it over the course of a couple thousand years, some bright mind would think of government again anyway?  We'd come up with the same ideas we already have.  We'd reinstate money and control to protect the majority of people from the minority of people.  Instead of sitting around feeling miserable about how the system doesn't make sense to you, why don't you be grateful that it's there?  At least you can't get killed by cougars prowling the streets, and if some douchebag mugs you, there will be repercussions for his actions.

There's a billion half-full glasses in front of you.  You could see them that way, as opposed to half-empty, or even better yet, you could get off your ass and decant them all into half as many completely full glasses.

Do whatever you have to do to stop feeling so miserable.  Your thoughts aren't unique, and there's no fucking conspiracy against you.  I don't know how you haven't come to these terms already, on your own.  High dose some LSD or mushrooms and really think about it.

Love this.

It's sooo easy to fall into the trap of "the world is shit, so why bother." The truth is that the world is only as bad as it is because of the number of apathetic people who think this way.

Try to change the world for the better, and don't forget to start with yourself; it's the only part of the world that you have some serious control over.

Most of the repsonses in this thread have just been cliches... I know my original post is a cliche as well. I had these feelings when I ws a teenager too, but I never accepted the other side... life is just which clich you choose to take i guess

"Quit taking yourself so seriously and just get a job."

'just get a job' means nothing, considering 99 % of jobs are shuffling paper in the bureaucracy, and making some greedy fat man's dreams come true. we can have jobs that satisfy our spirit but if you take a few steps back all jobs are basically policing a standard way of thinking/feeling. just like we all need chairs to make our butts comfortable, we all need hope to make our minds comfortable

"The truth is that the world is only as bad as it is because of the number of apathetic people who think this way."

I disagree, I bet most of us who have my beliefs and your beliefs live similar lives, no one is more of a problem than the other... did you see the chart where it shows what people do with their days, most of it was sleep, work, and TV.

the world isnt shit because of human actions, it is shit because of the qualities / instincts inside people that lead to the actions... as sophisticated as society is, all the billions of us just form two gigantic monkeys screaming and pooping. it is like trying to make humans have no hands or feet, it isn't in our design. I used to think the only hope for us would be to change us through science, but after watching Jurassic Park (lol) I realized that nature will rebel if you mess with it.

"One thing to remember is that as a member of western society you are among the richest people in the world.. A small bit of the money you make working in the machine can make a huge difference in the third world. You can literally save lives, a lot of lives. Take the money from the machine and redistribute it."

That is true.. so many people don't have the luxury of their basic needs met, but also so many people even in america dont even think, so they are in no better or worse position than the starving africans/indians.. the only difference is that in america they live longer and have more money and comforts.. but what difference really does it make if you live comfortably in america or die of starvation in africa? thousands of hours waiting in line and watching american idol... like it or not, life is cheap, look at how quickly insects live and die. there is not much difference between a fly who lives a long and luxorous life and a fly who is stomped on by a dog. I know this is a controversial thing to say, but we are in an animal world that is ruthless. Look at how screwed up the US is. Most countries in the world are hundreds of years away from being as miserable as us. anyway, I'm rambling, maybe there's a point somewhere in there

"There is such a thing as a middle ground. People dissatisfied with how things work have been known to extract themselves from it and form small communities all over the world. What the system wants though, is to make us think in a binary way: living in the system or becoming a crazy ermit."

Yeah, I agree with that, there are middle ground options, but I was already brainwashed, only a small part of me is rebelling but it is a loud part. I am already snugly fit in the machine, have a job, a dog, apartment... it's easier to live. I am a dark, crazy soul. The only light I see is in the arts and in the dimension of dreaming. I will probably one day end it all, btu I could just as easily not.

anyway thank you for your responses, they definitely showed me/ made me think, that the part of me who uses the priviledges of the western world, should enjoy and appreciate them... and that most peole dont think so abstractly and are just struggling in their own lives, so ther is value in helping them because they perceive it as important. no different than making a special birthday for a child. also some of hwat i say i am just throwing out and not necesarily commited to believing so apologize in advance if i said something offensive (i am very right brained (lol what a left brained thing to say))

the way i look at people is we are all the same innocent babies as we were when we were kids, and we deserve compassion and love and none of us are responsible for this evil/ruthless world, bceause it is like being responsible for the urge to eat. in conclusion i talk too much!!!

Hmm, to counter-act you final thought.

It is good to view humans generally as innocents... This will lead you to compassion, forgiveness and peace.

HOWEVER, philosophically, I think.... it is a more REALISTIC view to see ourselves as SOLEY responsible for the way the word is.

Whatever evil is in the world, is there because SOMEONE wants it there, and a LOT of the rest of us are too scared to stop it.

Have you ever studied the founding fathers and origins of America? You might be interested to know, they already thought this stuff thru fairly well........

Our constitution wasnt just randomly thrown together so we could spite england. And they didnt just "make it up and hope it works" either..... They borrowed a lot of the ideas from history.

Feeding and clothing everyone in the world isnt going to make peace on earth.

Even though, I am sure there are plenty who would have you believe the suffering of the world is a physical condition, and not a spiritual one.

Already life in the US seems "pointless" to a lot of people, esspecially the younger crowd..... The "point" of life is to struggle and attain. we have a feedback mechanism.... when you perform well, and are rewarded, and when you fail, you are punished... and justly so.

But in todays world...... Where true ownership of property and goods is stripped down to a taxation code. Where cooporate greed has overshadowed a 'hard days work' , Where we will tolerate a government that OBVIOUSLY has nobody except its own interests at heart. Where the wicked succeed because 'character'  and 'virture' have been out-dated and replaced with "charisma" and "charm" , The daily bread around the family table has been reduced to a blaring TV while the family stares mindlessly to avoid facing each other and the demons that have kept them in this cage for so long.

I think you are right. This world isnt going to get better.

But...... IF you keep doing your part to improve your own life and the lives of the ones you love........ What else could you ever want from a world like this?

Your OWN best. Not the best of your neighbor. Our country was founded on ideals like this.

Blah, rambling.

I agree with most of what percy says but i do think he is weighing in too heavily from one side. It's really up to you what you do with your life, you seem to be lacking in positive  visualizations that coincide with our society and your inner being. We could sit here all day talking about how much society sucks and how we are all just tools for the greater government but that's not going to get us anywhere but down. The mind needs balance.

probably a fav movie of yours

When no thought we have is ever unique, of course it all sounds cliche.  I laughed my balls off on acid and mushrooms at how cliche all of life's true answers are.  Get over it.  You're not unique.  It's not cool to be depressed about the world and mope about it.

I really don't mean to sound like a dick.  But I'm telling you these things in the context of what I wish someone had told me years ago.  Get over it.  Unless you really just like being a fumbling resident of your own darkness.
