gyms are part of the Family: Cortinariaceae any who inocybes used to be considered Cortinariaceae on that note its totally a psilocybin containing mushroom

Talking to me or thedudenj? I'm not eating it. Thedude already did. Just wondering how two threads with the same mushroom got different ID's. maybe I didn't post enough info or vice versa.

Not Gymnopilus.  Probably Inocybe, or given the spore print color, maybe Cortinarius.  Probably toxic.  What was the trip like?  Any bitter taste?  Blue/green staining?

Well, to both of you, really. I know the dude has done his share of research in this area, if he is going to eat them and claim them as an active inocybe, hopefully he will document some of it for the spread of knowledge.
I have sifted through many species of cortinarius. Many of them look just like the specimens in question (and there are most definitely more than one that look the same). I would need some scientific research, and then a reliable method of id before considering this.

Just for the record, staining is a direct result of damage (oxidation),  not to be confused  with coloration which is a natural phenomenon.

well they are totally active psilocybin mushrooms, no ill effects felt what so ever, taste like gyms while also tasting strong of psilocybin just like how they smelll. yeah i retract the statement of gyms but i found two other spieces of gyms in the location this lacked the classic gym smell which the gyms did.

basically im going with inocybe but its to be reminded experts used to consider the inocybes to be in the family of Cortinariaceae so its clearly a wavey subject. as i said earlier if we cant decide on a name for it im totally naming it

Well, then YOU will need to describe it scientifically. And even then you would not really name it after yourself necessarily. It's not like being the first Shoemaker or Levy to spot a comet so it gets named after you. It doesn't work like that, but I am sure you know that.

You can name the species if:

1.  You describe it in Latin;
2.  Have your paper published in a peer-reviewed journal.

That is exactly what professor Kuo did.  He's an English major.  Go for it.  Otherwise, it is up to the discretion of the person who describes it.

On the naming of Psilocybe weilii:
Quote:
In recognition of his numerous contributions to the fields of ethnomycology, ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology, Dr. Weil was given the distinction of having an entheogenic Psilocybe mushroom named in his honor: Psilocybe weilii was discovered in 1995 in Cherokee County, Georgia. A lignicolous species belonging to the Section Cordisporae, this blue-staining mushroom prefers a red-clay soil habitat beneath loblolly pines (Pinus taeda) where it fruits in groups or dense clusters (September through November). Chemical analysis of this mushroom revealed .05% baeocystin; .61% psilocybin; .27% psilocin; and .32% L-tryptophan (as unconverted psilocybin). Psilocybe weilii was authored by Dr. Gaston Guzman, Fidel Tapia, and mycologist Paul Stamets.

Source: http://www.stainblue.com/andrewweil.html

It wasn't named P. weilii because he discovered it, but because of his achievements. Just like you name a school "Albert Einstein High School", not "Joe the Plumber High School" because that dude happened to do the plumbing.

So, good luck on Inocybe dudenjii, bro.

On the consumption note: I wonder what the odor- and tasteless chemical psilocybin tastes and smells like, since thedudenj claims he tasted and smelled it before he decided to ingest the mushroom.

Ya know what I think. I think the mind plays wondrous tricks on the body everyday. I don't think it would be too much of a stretch for a ego tested mushroom hunter to claim he felt the effects of a substance, when in desperation to prove its psychedelic/or non toxic attributes. A rough example could be the placebo effect.

Some people sleep, wake up and are covered in sweat, you can trick your body into thinking your running, or performing actions in your dream when in reality your at the most relaxed point you can be.

This mushroom identification can not be for personal gain, if so, the results will not be flawed or bias.

That's a good point.  Apparently there is something in the production of the chemical in a mushroom that gives a familiar scent.  Overall, the smell is described as "farinaceous," but that description is as vague as "fruity" or "musty."  I have smelled quite a few species that were active and stained blue.  I describe the smell as "like cubes."  If these smelled like cubes--and I have no doubt they did--it could lead someone to experiment like thedudenj did.  Some of us, and the Shroomery in general, pride ourselves on mushroom safety.  After all, no one wants to be responsible for the poisoning of someone else.  Experimenting on your own is a matter of personal safety versus risk.

How does any of us know whether an unknown active mushroom or potentially new active species contains dangerous chemicals as well as active ones?  We don't.  And yet there has been more than one occasion where someone has bioassayed them.  And it goes without saying that some will ingest a mushroom purely for the science of it.  After all, that is how most of the toxicity of mushrooms are known.  Some die, some get high and some have a delicious meal.

My primary concern is that someone take a print and save some samples for examination.  The identity of the mushroom is important.  For me, more important than the effect it gives.

yeah i think we need to learn what this one is, im excited to eat the actual gyms i found in that area. as far as placebo goes i guess my ayahuasca use and cactus use is placebo. the thing about placebo to is duration and a few other things. but shrug. ill deffinatly be down to send a sample to a scientist to conduct more research in the matter. as far as toxins go im alive and kicking. we could romour that i didnt take enough and it was poisonous but hey.

when it comes down to it the natives didnt look at the mushrooms with microscopes and such you think their effects and spiritual stuff was all placebo cause we didnt check their stuff with chemical extractions and microscopes and going back i have had inactive spieces of gyms i can tell the difference btw that one time and all the active ones its silly to say that i cant really feel the difference. if that were the case i would eat more of that inactive one cause if the effect is achived its achived amount of drugs isnt important.

When I stated in my thread that it smelled like a psilocybe I totally meant cubes so to speak. Maybe I should have worded it as so, good point.
The cap on the one I found was 3" wide and the stem was aprox. 4" long. The woods were mixed. I know there were a lot of maple and birch and a few pines. As to which pines I do not know. In the same forest there is also beach but I am not sure if one was near. The print was a rusty brown.

Pretty large mushroom, lqdtrance.  Thanks for the info on it and the trees.

As far as cultivating it are concerned the chances aren't good.  Birch, Beech and pine trees around plus it looks like an Inocybe and we're talking mycorrhizal associations.  That means you can't grow it without a tree (for the most part).

Nice work guys.

im hoping to find some Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, blue footer(Psilocybe caerulipes) and pan subs(Panaeolus cinctulus) too

too bad there isnt a poke'dex for mushrooms that by letting it scan the mushrooms it would tell you what it is and uses, that would be really badass reguardless tho you gota catch em all over 150 kinds lol
