I was raised in a pretty fucked up religious setting... one half of my family are die hard catholics, the other half are die hard buddhists
I ended up a luciferian

raised pentecostal christian. :shudder:
going to church 5 times / 4 days a week for eight years straight, watching people get the "blessing of tongues" and babbling on in other languages, passing out, having some sort of seizures, and praising the lord when they stood back up.
one elderly woman broke her hip during one of her "holy spirit" moments and would not let anyone assist her until the pastor gave the sermon.
pure insanity. complete and utter brainwashing, expert use of music and tonal inflection by the pastor.. he had it down to a science.
fuck that. fuck any organized religion. they are only selling you lies. you can disagree with me all you like, but this is what i know to be true.
after that, i went down the dark path. i popped out of that with some new-agey bullshit, started studying shamanism, took a lot of psychedelics, and eventually realized that religion is unnecessary.
i think of "god" as the entire universe including every aspect of it, including us. every dimension, every creature, every star, every disease, every fucked up thought..
it's all god. there is no evil, there is no good. there just is. any feeling of separation is only illusory and necessary for the grand consciousness to experience every single possibility.
to quote jesus wore dickies.. - "i'm living in god's dream.."
i also accept the fact that i may be completely insane.. and i'm comfortable with that.

I was raised a Mormon. Stuck with it through my youth and into my early 20s even though I was always lacking any real faith in it. I even did the whole missionary thing. You've seen those guys, riding their bikes around in a white shirt and tie....yep, that was me. Then in my early 20s, after returning from my mission, I had the balls to go searching for my true beliefs and not care what all my Mormon family and friends thought about me anymore. That was 20 years ago. Now I'm agnostic bordering on atheism. I haven't seen any convincing evidence of higher powers or life after death so I just live my life like its the only one I got and when I die if I find I am still around I'll figure the rest out then.

It was on one good mushroom trip with my friend when I came to the understanding that anyone who deemed to know anything about God (his will, sins, etc.) was lying. It's pretty self-evident tautologically. I became an atheist because I value truth and honesty too much to pretend, as that would reinforce the delusions of some of my friends and family members. I had a Polish Catholic lab-mate who didn't stay Catholic for long after working with me.
I value some people too much to respect their religion, and I always try to help them shed that crutch, if they are receptive to it in polite discourse.

I was raised in a Reformed Jewish home, but I rebelled and flunked myself out of Hebrew school before my Bar Mitzvah. I was baptised Christian in a Roman Catholic Church after college (having heard the myths since childhood from my best friend) in the attempt to move from the psychedelic, Hindu, yogic BE HERE NOW 'Hridayam' Heart Cave concept to the Catholic Sacred Heart symbol (and it's mysticism). After realizing that I loved women too much to become a monk, I entered a Methodist seminary and got somewhat 'Protestantized,' while also studying Eastern Orthodox Christianity (because their Hesychastic contemplative methods are the best IMHO).
Now, my 'tag' would be Jewish-Christian to some, Messianic Jew to others. I once told a Catholic priest that I was a Jewish Catholic (vs. Polish, Roman, etc.). As awkward as it is, I might more authentically say that I'm a Jewish-Christian Gnostic, the Jewish-Christian part embodying all of my background and the associated myths, plus my Gnostic attitude about The Perennial Philosophy. Some years ago, I came full-circle to Judaism by way of Kabbalism, but that Kabbalism underwent a further development into Qabalism, which admits of both Christian and Pagan (occult) elements. I clearly have a strong Pagan side in addition to the Jewish-Christian elemnts. Perhaps this post says it best:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10814846#10814846

Note that there are 3 male figures (poster, painting under poster, crucifix), and 3 female figures (Mary the Mother, Mary the Wife and red-winged Sophia). Crucifix on left, Kabbalistic Tree on right). Mushroom-shaped equilateral cross (real Eastern Orthodox priestly vestment symbol, in the center of which are ears of grain). Pot of incense. Rye grain under votive table, small mushroom in front of the Marys, and atop the central Mexican art piece, which also has a planet-surrounded cosmic Jesus, between the pillars of Boaz and Joachim, in the maw of a cat-like mouth of Hell. Eternal Light above. The Icon poster reads "Holy Image, Holy Space." Perhaps these symbols are more telling of my synthesis than mere words.

I'm tall
All my life people asked me "How's the weather up there", while I was of course wondering what it was like down in the fog.
So I said "its fine, thank you"
I'm still tall.

My parents never mentioned god to me once so i was an atheist for most of my life until I smoked saliva I got the feeling that i had been very wrong. Now I would consider my belief system to be mostly Christian/gnostic. even so its really not good to pick one religion and identify with it. you should try to find the one true church of god that is hidden behind all the religions and has always existed.
