Habitat:
Central Kentucky, fallen hardwood

Gills:
dark, brown to grayish
Stem:
Length 1", diameter 2-3 mm, color brown with darker spots

Cap:
Diameter up to 1/2", color brown with darker spots
, texture smooth, conical

Maybe Mycena but its really hard to be sure without a clear picture of the underside of the cap. If I am correct on the genus, the gills should be white.

He said the gills were dark brown to grayish.

Alan...I did find another species very similar to the first one which has white gills, although I left it on the log...luckily i did grab pics...
