Hericium erinaceus
    #1081959 - 11/24/02 04:30 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Here's my Hericium erinaceus culture (light from behind):

It grows very slowly and Stamets in GGMM says that the best method is to inoculate with liquid spawn. I tried with agar chunks anyway and the jars were showing absolutely no signs of growth for at least 2 weeks. They were incubated at about 25C. I checked and shaked them every once and a while and almost gave up. I didn't take a look for the last 5 days and when I checked the jars they were fully colonized!!! Even the primordia formed on the surface. I have no idea what happened...

I suspect that I damaged primordia that were forming on agar with shaking and triggered this frenzied growth.

Should you shake every grain jar or it is better to leave it alone? Does it depends of the kind of mycelium too?

Shaking any mycelium that becoms aerial is a bad idea. It squishes it!

It may look like a button mushroom right now, but wait until you see how it grows!
