Trusted Identifier needs ID. Any ideas on this?
    #10808820 - 08/05/09 11:24 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Pictures are self-explanatory with a few comments.

This little mushroom was growing in a river valley by the edge a path near an Oak tree.  It was at the end of a hunt with too little light to take a pic.  It's a small yellow-stemmed mushroom with a burgundy cap.  The yellow gills are actually folds.  And it smells like Apricots.  It was the only one.  I basically picked it out of curiosity.

I call it the Burgundy-Capped Chanterelle.  Is there anything like it as far as anyone knows?

If you have any other questions, just ask.

Interesting! Check back on that spot regularly to see if any more pop up. I have no idea what this could be; perhaps an oddball regular chanterelle, perhaps a new species, perhaps something completely different than a chanterelle...

I'll get back on your pm btw, just gimme some time to read

i'm quite sure it's C. cibarius var. amethysteus.

or maybe the cap is just dried out

I'll be damned.  I think you are close if that isn't it.  I didn't realize there were Chanterelles with caps different from the stem.  Index Fungorum lists over 400 species and calls this one Cantharellus amethysteus. I also read about it in The Chanterelle Book.  Evidently it is quite rare.

Thanks!

Thanks.

I will check this spot regularly and if another one pops up I'll watch it until maturity.  Leave it to me to find the "oddball."

Thanks for explaining that.  I was wondering how you figured it out so quick.  And you're right, they sure are pretty.
