First Time Grower—Grow Bag & Misc Questions
    #10810700 -

I purchased a grow bag from "The Mad Season". It seemed like an easy, and cheap way to grow for my first time. I've read many of the techniques listed on shroomery, and i have been left a little confused.

I purchased three 12cc syringes from Microtech. The strains are: Golden Teacher, Cambodian, and b+. Which one should I give the go ahead? I know it matters very little, but is there a slight reason to try one or the other?

Do I need to be concerned with temperature regulation? If so, how would I go about this? Some posts seems to touch upon this and others don't. I'm a little confused.

I intended to grow in the bag the whole way through, and fruit in the bag.  Would anyone advocate otherwise? Would I be right to say the other option is to simply open the bag and dump in one of those big Rubbermaid storage tubs?

I am obviously not going to use all 12cc's in a syringe. Is there a procedure for saving the remaining spores or do i just put the syringe cap back on?

Should I get more growbags for the other two syringes, and the remaining spores in the one I will have already used part of? Or would another technique be recommended? Please note I am trying to work on a very low budget.

There are a lot of posts in which people have failed with their grow bags. Is there a typical cause for this? Anything I should or should not do?

On The Mad Season website:
Quote:
** Tip - To maximize subsequent flushes, you may dunk the substrate block in distilled water overnight, then dab the excess water off with a paper towel and place back into the bag. To close the bag, just fold the top over and use either a clothespin or paper clip to hold the fold in place.

Could someone either clarify what exactly this means, or post a relevant link?

Lastly, I am very concerned about when I should start growing. I will be moving around a lot over the course of the month. Can I start now and transport the bag? Should I wait to begin the grow? Is there some system for transport that would be fine. Could I put the growbag in an opaque storage tub for example in order to maintain already existing conditions? One of my concerns with the transport is varying temperature.

Any advice or tips of any nature are welcomed. I have searched the forum extensively. FooMan's post entitled "Grow Bag Pointers" was especially helpful. I just need some clarity and advice.

Thanks!

Room temps are fine, most places. If you aren't sure, use a min/max thermometer for a few days and see.

Any of those strains is fine, pick one and use it.

I recap syringes, then put them in a bag in the fridge.

Up until you start to fruit it, you could just put the bag in a box and move it around, but I think you would have been better off to wait. Since you already have the bag, shoot it up.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

use half of that B+ syringe in your bag as a test run. i would not recommend fruiting in the bag, though other people seem to have success with it. it's just too easy to put together a decent low cost fruiting chamber- look into a shotgun FC. when you figure out what your doing get the 5 bag pack and use the rest of your spores, though you could also stretch 2 and 1/2 syringes into 10 bags, too. just my .02

all you need is a syringe and the bag

don't worry about incubating, just inoculate it and let it sit
when theres about 25% of it covered in mycelium mash it up with your hands to distribute the mycelium which will then recolonize throughout the bag

as far as inoculating i pushed it into the injection port and move it to an angle where the needle is up against the bag so you can see the solution going in, i did about 1 cc on both the left and right side of the port, i suppose you could inject a little more.

id say leave it alone untill the second flush, once its 100% introduce it to a lighting schedule, and i like to squeeze the air out and pull in some fresh air, iv even cit some small slits in spots on bags.

then after you harvest first flush, dunk then.

LOL!  You haven't been paying attention have you?  I never get why people insist on skipping the easy ways and demand to go straight to other methods.

Grow bags are a fairly shitty way to go under any circumstances.  For a first timer it's certainly foolish.

Good luck anyhow.

I don't see how making cakes is any easier than injecting a bag and neglecting it in a closed for a couple weeks. Growing mushrooms doesn't appear to be rocket science. Seems like it's just a game of sterility, humidity, temperature management, and patience.

It's only because there's so much information out there that people get confused. Everyone seems to have their own special technique which is fine.

But as the saying goes; Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one.

My first post, but I am embarking on a grow bag plus a few other methods soon and through my research thought this might help OP if his stuff isn't already going strong.

Cervantes 10 step Mad Season grow bag program:
Cervantes said:
Here's my 10 steps to using a grain grow bag:

1. Unfold the bag (So the filter patch can do its thing).

2. Inject the substrate. Inject between the plastic wall of the bag and the substrate, allowing your spores to run down the inside of the plastic bag. This allows spores to cover a lot more surface area than if you just inject the middle of the substrate. You should be able to see the needle between the substrate and the bag before you inject. DO NOT INJECT THE MIDDLE OF THE SUBSTRATE or your bag may not grow anything. Like the next step, this step is VITAL.

3. Mash the bag by hand (Yes, mash it... bags feel like bricks when you get 'em... after inoculating, you must mash the substrate inside the bag... mash it good... once it feels like potting soil, you're all set.). Don't worry, bags are strong, they can handle this step. Just don't poke them with anything sharp. The goal is to loosen the soil and to spread the spores around. This step is VITAL.

4. Wait 3-14 days until you see growth (Usually 4-6 days).

5. Once you are certain you see growth, MASH the bag again. Try and move the patch of myc all around the bag. (When you mash the mycelia, the myc will seem to disappear, this is normal so don't worry, it will spread like WILDFIRE when it grows back... greatly speeding up colonization time).

6. After the bag recovers from the LAST mash (usually 2-3 days), MASH again. The goal here is to move the colonized substrate around so it comes in contact with the uncolonized substrate... to spread the myc. Once again, the myc will seem to vanish as it is mashed. Don't worry, you should know by now, it'll be back and better than ever.

7. Let the bag finish colonizing. If you mashed correctly, full colonization should only be 2-3 days away. You can mash again if needed ( especially if you still have large patches of uncolonized substrate), but be patient. If you mash every day, it'll never colonize. Mashing is not required, but it greatly speeds the colonization process... which helps the bag retain moisture for its first flush.

8. If you haven't exposed your bag to the light, do this once your bag is colonized. There is no reason to keep your bag in the dark (but may people still do it). I prefer keeping the bag in the light, so I can watch it grow.

9. Pins should come 1-2 weeks after full colonization... and shrooms should follow. Shrooms take 4-10 days to grow from pin to mushroom. Once you have pins, just pat yourself on the back and be patient. Pins are a good sign. They mean you will almost certainly get shrooms. Only people who mess around with their bags too much at this point seem to fail. Sure, once in a while, you can pick your bags up to get a better look, but keep physical contact with the bags to a minimum, lest you abort your prescious pins.

10. Cut open the bag and harvest your shrooms... spray the inside of the bag with a little water and re-seal the bag... or dunk your cake in the bag for 12-24 hours (Keep the patch dry... it is easier than it sounds, just don't pour water over the patch). Do not open the bag before the first flush. Yes, if you open the bag you get more fresh air exchange and that is a good thing, but by keeping the bag closed until after the first flush you have a higher likelihood of succeeding, ESPECIALLY if it is your first time growing. When you pay for a bag, you want it to work.

* Repeat steps 9 and 10 until bag is done fruiting (Most cakes contaminate when they're done producing... don't feel bad if your bag contams after 3-4 flushes.)

Hope this helps!

We've been doing this shit for well over a decade.  When noobs like you don't take the common sense advice learned from a deacde of watching noobs fail then yes, you are foolish and stupid.

Very simple, a grain bag on its own contains no water retaining substance so it will fruit very poorly. So you either need to case the grain or use it as spawn. You Poodingles are using a only grain bag.

Most signature "fruit in the bag" bags contain other things that retain an adequate supply of water for the fruits to develop.

All these are extra procedures so extra things that can go wrong. You would not have to do these extra things using cakes.

im new to this also. i just purchased a grow bag, and just got my spores in the mail...now one thing that is bugging me..is I've read alot of posts. and alot of different techniques. seems people have their own ways which work BEST FOR I've..< '
in my opinion and logic....i would figure that a bag u buy, knock up, n leave alone,,,seems a more EASIER way,, less steps, less of a process. and less chance of contamination. so i dont understand how every1 says its NOT an easier way. maybe not for YOU it not. but i think for certain people it is. a bag IS an EASIER way...for ME. i think it depends on the person growning them. I've read ALOT about them n other techniques. you might not want to say it EASIER...but i would at least admit it is less of a process to use a bag.
