bulk substrate test

Is there such thing as a better bulk substrate to use?
for example hpoo vs. coir vs. cpoo/verm vs coffee and combinations of substrates. this question is for cubes.
I want to hear what kind of results people are getting from different subs. also what ratio do you use?

If you had perfectly perfect conditions, and a good isolated monoculture, you might be able to really answer this. Most folks here will tell you poo is better, and they are probably right, since that's what the mushrooms grow on in the wild. But lots of people have great results without any poo, including me. Any cultivator can tell you that a rich and complex mixture is going to be best- poo+coir is better than each alone. And gypsum is known to be an essential, or at least highly preferred, ingredient.

Not really. It's what works for you. A good mixture of a few ingredients is probably your best bet.
The idea behind having a nice mix and making your own bulk substrates your self is to make up something nutritious for the mycelium AND to give the sub a good texture.
Some straw or vermiculite in cow manure makes it easier to use, and both are nutritious in themselves. I don't use more than %30-%40 vermiculite in my subs.
Gypsum is a great idea and can make up %10 of your substrate. It's used in commercial mushroom farming. It prevents drastic pH swings/ helps hold the pH stable.
Coffee grounds can be added to make up a total of %33 of your sub according to RR. I tend to not use more than %20, just me.
A little bit of chicken manure at up to %5 is a good idea to according to a few old hands on the boards. I only just started using this.

a read a post here once i think it was by agar but im really not sure.. stating that a compost.. by the way the kind you make your self thats partially decomposed and not the fully composted stuff you get at nurseries was the best bulk substrate

I am no where near an expert yet, but all we've used so far is just plain old coir and we have had miraculous results. Far better then we even dreamed of having. Our ratio was pretty much 50/50 coir and WBS some even a touch more coir than WBS. I am very satisfied, but I am sure it could be even better.

so far, these are the kind of answers I was looking for.
I talked to cyber a few weeks ago and he uses, 50/30/20 coir, verm, cpoo. said it is his best results with testing.
I have used hpoo, with great results.
with the different subs listed above..coffee, verm, hay, coir, hpoo, cpoo, gypsum, chicken poo, just wondering why there is not alot of tests results to show the difference in substrates.
also does wbs, rye, brf, flax seed, different hulls work better for different substrates?
Looking to get different results from different growers to figure out what works best.
and last thing, I didn't see any ratio's of spawn vs. substrate. I have used 1:1, 1:2, 1:3. 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6 with similar fruits with all these. Only noticeable thing to me was colonizing time.
Look forward to hearing more from everyone.

As far as spawn ratios, I've read about people going as far as 1:10 and higher. I do 1:3, and I would go higher, but I like to get my subs into the FC quicker.
That's what ratio really comes down to, colonization speed.
Hypothetical: a 1:10 ratio that works out to be a total of 2 gallons of substrate will yield the same amount as a 1:3 ratio that adds up to 2 gallons of substrate. The difference is, the 1:3 will be fruiting faster than the 1:10.

I personally favor Coir + gypsum + verm + coffee, myself. At first casual glance, poo would seem to be more labor intensive to prepare, and more likely to contam due to the fact it is shit, it was sitting outside, and you cannot really know what was growing on it, or landed on it, etc. You could be the unlucky person to have poo with a rare virulent mold or bacteria or fungus or whatever that survives pasteurization and takes over your operation.
Coir is processed, and seemingly far cleaner pathogen wise, as are all the additives. I would imagine it is more forgiving of mistakes, and less likely to contam than poo, even if in some universe it may yield slightly less.
