Incorrect, and disinformative.

Specifically, Nagasaki and Hiroshima were choosen because they had the most infrastructure untouched by bombing raids, and were still large industrial cities.

DO NOT spread the disinformation that we choose those cities to maximize civilian casualties.  That is untrue and if you repeat it you better show sources or you are lying.  Do not spread lies please.

No, they were not in the process of surrender.  They were in the process of fortifying the Japanese home islands for the expected invasion.  This included conscripting every last man, woman, and child available to engage in forced (slave) labor, the assembly of a fleet of suicide boats loaded with explosives to send against the invasion fleet, and the organizing of suicide troops composed of civilians.

As Coaster said, when word leaked out that Hirohito was going to surrender after the first atomic bomb strike, a military coup took place which was thwarted.  Luckily for Japan he was allowed to address his people directly (for the first time ever) and call for surrender.  Which they were divinely obligated to do, not being full human beings as they were not of royal blood.

Actually you have it backwards.  The only people we ever 'nuked' were a corrupt and vile military regime which enslaved 100 million people.

After we nuked them, changes happened in Japan.  Universal suffrage, the recognition that average citizens were human beings with inalienable rights, the recognition that females were not property and suffrage for them as well, the dismantling of a military-industrial complex which comprised a greater percentage of total GDP than any other in recorded history.  After these changes, Japan became a close ally of the United States and made transistor radios and cars and everyone got rich.

There was no warning of an atomic bomb attack.

Both countries were in an offical state of declared war.  Bombing attacks were not announced.

The Allies called on Japan to surrender unconditionally on two formal occassions prior to the bombing of Hiroshima.  This ultimatum was rejected by the Japanese government.

After Hiroshima, Truman made a speech saying Japan would face ruin like no other seen on earth.  No mention of atomic bombs was made.  The prior ultimatum for unconditional surrender were still formally in effect.  Japan still did not surrender.

It was not until AFTER Nagasaki that Hirohito decided to surrender.  His condition, being the humanitarian that he was (sarc.), was that the Imperial regime and household remain inviolate.  He got his condition.

On a side note, a few days ago I saw a peace sign sticker on a truck. As I got nearer to it, I could see writing around the peace sign. It said, "Peace through superior firepower."

Yeah, but that's a lame stance. There are too many people in this world and most of them are pretty ignorant and don't care about the welfare of their fellow man. However, destroying individuals isn't the point. If we all lived our lives, constantly trying to make ourselves better people and not worrying about being nosy and trying to change others to fit our mold, things would eventually get better, I think. Sorry for the run on sentence, but I'm just so sick of people focusing on the problem instead of the solution, so that the problem is repeated over and over.

My grandfather was born in Japan, in the town of Kobe.  His parents were missionaries.  They later moved to Hiroshima.  They came home to America, and then later WWII broke out.  By this time, my grandfather was a young man, and he signed up for the army.  He never saw combat.  Instead, he worked in the Pentagon decoding Japanese messages.  When the war ended, he was part of the reconstruction effort in Japan.  He went to Hiroshima and saw the obliterated landscape where the house he grew up in used to stand.  I've often thought about how surreal that must have felt for him.

I wonder how different things would have been if we didn't drop the bomb, maybe they would have still surrendered regardless.


The U.S. would have invaded Tokyo and the deaths resulting from a full land invasion of Japan would have been staggering. The war would have dragged on further, and many more Japanese citizens would have been killed along with many more Allies.
