Population growth out of control!

Everybody knows that the human population is growing super-fast, but what's to be done about it? Sterilization? Mass killings every 7 years? Will the problem work itself out? Maybe we'll have a huge nuclear war and everything will work out.

Not sure if the population levels are increasing in rich countries. The first step would be to stop the capitalists raping and devastating Africa so people didn't need to have 10 kids in the hope that one will reach adulthood and be able to provide for them.
Stop forcing the Africans to grow and export crops for us instead of feeding themselves, drop the debt and stop arming and installing dictators who allow western corporations to devastate and rob the land.
That would be a good start.

It's true that in the richer countries of the world people are birthing children at a sustainable rate, so the key would be to end hunger and make everyone rich.

India doesn't have widespread hunger (aside from hunger caused by not eating any meat) and they have the fastest growing pop in the world.

In reply to:

Many (if not all) 'Western' countries are reproducing at below replacement levels for native born people, most increases in population is these areas are due to immigrant birth rates and immigration.
In reply to:

This is an ignorant statement. To blame capitalists for excessive birth rates in third world countries is silly. All of the world's problems cannot be laid at the feet of capitalists. Pull your head out of Karl Marx's dead ass and enlighten yourself to the possiblity that there may be many reasons for peoples' plights. If you looked at some statistics, you would find that as societies are more capitalistic and their members become more wealthy, their birth rates decline (see previous comments about 'Western' countries).

rofl of course the problem will work itself out.... this is what diseases are for - they're going to keep getting trickier, IMO, and keep our population under control.

gimme a break man, if you gave every family in the world right now an acre of land to farm their own food on, they would all fit in the state of texas. if everybody had a square foot to stand in, they would all fit in L.A. overpopulation is a myth...60% of all first rate countries don't have a birth rate large enough to replenish their current population due to the extremely large use of birth controls and abortions. i mean shit...their are more and mroe old people these days....people are living longer, and less babies are being born....thus, a smaller, generally older population.

So I guess it is settled that in so called "developed" countries the birth rate is sustainable but that it is the third world countries that are causing the population problems.
Hmmmmm.... Well my understanding of the population problem is that it has to do with how much resources are used by each person. Am I right? If resources were infinite there would be no problem with the population increasing.
SO, it does not matter if the third world countries are causing overpopulation. ONE SINGLE person in a developed nation uses WAY more resources than an average person in a third world country! (I don't have the exact numbers right now but I have seen statistics and they are ridiculous!)
So next time you blame those people in "third world" countries remember if you are on a computer and you have a car etc. YOU are using as much resources as a whole shitload of Indians or Africans!

So seven per cent of the money they receive is an outright gift, and the other ninety-three per cent is in the form of loans which are nominally expected to be repaid some day?
What's your point?

"India doesn't have widespread hunger (aside from hunger caused by not eating any meat)" Have you ever been to India Fcuerkt?
I HAVE been to India. How can you say they do not have hunger probelms?
I fucking saw people lying all along the road dying of hunger. I saw a beggar that had a rope tied around his neck and attached to his hands so he could keep his hands in a begging position without using effort. I have never seen a skinier person in my life. I could see the shape of his intestines through his skin. I would like you to go tell one of these people that there is no hunger problem in India.
Go over to India sometime and walk around a little bit, THEN come back here and tell us a little bit about the hunger problem over there!

So seven per cent of the money they receive is an outright gift
Often conditional on a lot of crazy "world bank approved" economic conditions. Look at what following "free-market" world bank theories did to Indonesia and you'll have an idea of how catastrophic that is.
and the other ninety-three per cent is in the form of loans
Bearing in mind that the vast majority of these "loans" went straight into the bank balances of western corporations over there via the pockets of corrupt western installed dictators. The people - who never saw any of the money anyway - are the ones left to "pay it back".

Too many people...
The earth can't support six billion people. Nearly a third of the population is starving to death. It's an artificial situation that would never usually happen in nature, but then we created agriculture and offset the whole balance. It will even itself out though.

This is false. The average western family produces 2.5 children- That in itself prooves that we grow more than just to replace our parents. Those .5 children grow up and make children of their own. The cycle snowballs until something stops it.
I think we may be able to colonize other planets in our solar system, but probably not before we all die of war.

And they default on their loans. It takes two parties to create a loan transaction. Both parties are responsible. But I do agree with you, U.S. taxpayers should not be underwriting loans to anybody, this goes against the principles of free market capitalism. The lenders should assume full responsiblities for writing bad loans and the government should not force the consequences upon the taxpayers.

African countries are economic basket cases due to their own governments, their lack of well defined property rights and lack of honoring contractual obligations.

Actually, I feel colonialism played a lot bigger role. They were doing just fine living off the land and what not until "we" (I use the term loosely) came in and forced them from their communally owned lands into privatized individually owned housing, shoved taxes down their throat left, right, and center, and started controlling their food supply while forcing foreign currency upon them. It's no wonder that they are "economic basket cases" as you put it, since we forced them to become part of a system that they never wanted to be a part of in the first place.
