Beginning of "Overlay?"
    #10806637 -

Hey folks,

Well, my monotub is colonizing very quickly.  I am very happy about that, but I fear I may be experiencing the beginnings of "overlay."  From what I understand, overlay is essentially "over colonizing."

I just want to verify with you guys, since you are much more experienced in these matters.

I have the lid sealed with sterilized aluminum foil.  I did have the tub in a couple trashbags, but I figured I will take them out for a bit to get some GE going.  I have polyfill in the monotub holes.  Hopefully, taking the tub out of the trashbags won't cause too much FAE.

I am really not an incompetent photographer.  I know a thing or two, but I couldn't use the flash because of glare.  Here are some pictures.  The quality is shit, because I did not want to open the lid.  If the pictures are too poor to tell, that is understandable.

The myc looks a little "puffy."  It looks very healthy and white, but I am afraid if it keeps growing like it has been, it will be completely overlayed.  That would suck.

If it is overlay, how do I remedy this issue?  Patch with casing?

Did you apply a casing layer?

No. I did not.  Is overlay only associated with a casing layer?  I wasn't planning on casing, but if I have to, it isn't a problem.

well your suppose to let it all turn white. then apply casing or put in fruiting conditions. So your fine in my opinion. what is your substrate?

The myc doesn't look like it is "stretching" throughout the surface.  It looks more like little patches.  I did use a thinner substrate level for the top.  Enough to cover the spawn completely though.

Substrate is coir, verm, coffee grounds, gypsum, worm castings, compost...

Temps have been in the 75-78F region.  I could lower them if needed.  The substrate was at field capacity when I spawned.  I squeezed pretty hard and only a little water trickled out.

and if it is colonnized and cased you can open the lid just not too often. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10694947#10694947 check this out  and is pinning

I don't think it there are contaminants.  I can see areas between the thicker patches starting to fill in.

Then i would give it time and let it fully colonize, then fruit or add casing. Your choice. What is your bulk sub? coir?

Im not 100% but i know that if its coir you dont need to wait for it to colonize all the way but close. Maybe get advise from someone who would know that answer. That is if you dont know and or are not going to case...

Yes, overlay is ONLY associated with casing layers and if you grow for twenty years, you'll be (un)lucky to see it once during that time.

Bulk substrates are supposed to fully colonize.

Thanks again RR for saving my ass.  The enormous amount of details in this hobby are truly fascinating.  I will just keep playing the waiting game and let her colonize and consolidate.

Is it appropriate to case while the rest of the substrate consolidates?

Case after 100%

You really do not need to case bulk substrates however.

So after the surface colonizes 100%, you should wait a week for it to consolidate.  Could you just case after full colonization and fruit once the myc breaks the casing surface even though it likely won't take a whole week?  I guess I am not sure how to handle consolidation and casing in the same time frame.

I may not case since this is my first monotub.  I will probably keep it simple, but I would like to know for future reference.

Well if you mixed your tub up correctly, when the top/sides are all white, as should be the center and whatever isn't visible.

After you see the top/sides 100%, that is when we would case, and throw right back into a casing run.  Once the myc starts to make its way through the casing layer, we fruit.

I personally never cased bulk substrates.  I only cased straight grain.
