How do you ask someone for a loan?

I'm still out of a car after I totaled it a year ago.  I'm currently paying down thousands in student loans, credit cards, rent to my dad, etc. so saving for a car is out of the question.  It'd be a good year and half before I even had enough for a downpayment. 

There's this old guy that I work with that's rich.  It's widely known in the store that he doesn't work for a paycheck, he works to keep himself occupied.  We're friendly, I mean we don't go out of our way to make conversation or anything but I'd say we have a good relationship there.  I want to ask him to loan me some money to go toward a car.  I don't see any other options at this point, I'm in desperate need.  The car I am driving now is my dad's and he also lets my little brother use it too so it's not going to last.  In fact I just broke down today on the way home from work, mechanic thinks it's the fuel pump.  This really sparked the urgency for me to get a car, and he's the only person I could ask to help me out. 

I wouldn't even know where to start that conversation.  I hate asking for things, especially money.  I don't wanna look like the beggar coming to ask for money only because I know he has it, you know what I mean?  I'm thinking about going out for a cigarette with him in the morning when the store is still closed and just coming right out with it.  Suppose he said yes, how would I work out the amount?  How does that work? 

Has anyone here ever been in this position?  How did you handle it?

He'll wonder wtf am I asking him to go out to lunch.  :lol:  Our relationship exists from 9-5, which is another reason it's knotting my stomach up to even think about asking him.  But I'm desperate, I have to at least try.

can you get a bank loan? that would be awesome if that guy was able to forward you some cash, but i'd be really surprised. if you don't think you have any other options though, bring it up casually. talk to him about how your car broke down and you're worried it's not going to last, but that you have student loans piling up and can't afford to get a new one right now. maybe he'll just offer it if he likes you enough.

Well the big question here is how/when you'd be able to pay him back, and also the level of friendship you feel you have with him.

Is it just temporary, like you'll be able to pay him with your next paycheck, or is it just borrowing money indefinitely? That plays a big difference.

buy a piece of shit old truck for a few hundred and get the $4,500 for the cash for clunkers shit and a lot of dealers are matching it so youll get 9,000 and compact cars go for about 14 so all youll need to loan is 5 grand for a brand new car

He knows about my loans, and how my dad brother and I share a car, and he knows my need for it so I know I won't have to drone on about it, I just need an icebreaker. 

And Aquaket, I'd pay him back like $100 every paycheck, I can afford just about that.  I'm not too confident on my level of friendship with him, I mean we joke, shoot the shit, tell each other to fuck theirself all the time lol, but I don't know how he sees me.  I do know that if I had the money and he needed it I wouldn't hesitate.  He's a good guy.  Stubborn old mule but a good guy.

Tell him your situation and allow him the chance to help.

5k would be an awesome help if he agreed.  I'd have enough to buy a decent used car that gets me from A to B.  My first car at 17 was a 93 Ford Tempo.  It treated me well the entire time I owned it.... only paid $1600 for it.  Plus I see him every day at work, it's not like I'd skip town with his money lol.

you gotta own the car for a year registered in your name
have proof of insurance for a year in your name
drive it onto the lot

but i'll just throw this out there

5,000 is actually a lot of money

people work hard for their money

i wouldn't lend 5000 to someone unless they were a close friend no matter how rich i was

I don't think that even comes into the equation, it's a matter of what kind of guy he is and what kind of friend he sees you as. As you have described him though, you'll probably get the loan, just make sure you pay him back :shrug:

Yeah, I won't really know until I ask.  Thanks for the responses too guys, I hate being in this position.  :tongue:  Man it's gonna feel good when all my shit is paid down.  I'm definitely doing better though, before I couldn't even handle the bills I DO have.  I managed to negotiate with the creditors and loaners to get myself on a reasonable payment plan.  Now my focus is getting mobile and moving out to a small apartment.  I'm 23 now, my life needs to START.  :crankey:

I paid really close attention to his body language here and he made kind of a, "I hadn't thought about that" face and gave little mini nods.  I really don't remember what else he said after that because I was screaming inside but his body language didn't look negative (no cringes or anything).

After he responded I told him what I could pay him and whatnot but we both agreed that I'm going to try my luck at leasing something first.  I'm still unclear what his answer is but I'm optimistic just based on his facial expression.  I'm going to hit a bunch of places in the area and try my luck, then if they all turn me down I'll ask him again. 

All I know is, it definitely didn't feel like a no.

A lot of dealers will be able to work w/ you. There are finance and sales managers that have people in the finance company that they know and they will put together a deal for them. The dealership just needs to really be wanting to make a deal.

If I were you I would just hit up craigslist for something that needs just a little bit of work, find yourself a old chevy truck with a bad motor they ain't hard to put in and you can get a 350 for pretty cheap
