pathetic casing
    #1080308 - 11/23/02 11:08 PM (14 years, 13 days ago)

i have a casing producing its first flush. right now it only has about three one inch tall mushrooms on it, which are all growing from the sides. i already harvested one shroom that was only about an inch tall but the veil was starting to break and the others look like they're about to start breaking. i raised the humidity in my terrarium to 95% (should i have done that?) and the temp is around 70. anyone know what could be wrong?

What strain, and how deep is your substrate layer?
I?m assuming from your growth that you may have overlay.
Is the top casing layer over colonized or matted?
If so you should deep scratch it.

:grin:Good Luck

the strain is eq the substrate is about an inch of verm cased with 50/50 verm and peat
there's no overlay, actually i didn't allow the mycelium to completely grow over the top layer, should i have. i wasn't too clear on that

my casings are pretty pathetic also. i get like 3 or 4 dry grams a flush. your setup sounds like it has the same conditions as mine.

This sound like the same experience I have had with EQ's, but they were the most potent mushies I have done. I am comparing them with B+, Golden Teachers, and Cambos. I'm certainly no expert, but I believe that the deeper your substrate the bigger your shrooms will be. I am also a firm believer in not letting your casings dry out and mist mine at least every other day when they are in the fruiting chamber.

I agree with groin grinder (giggles) that the deeper your layer the bigger fruit. You shouldl still get the same yeild as if you got bigger fruit just more, smaller fruit. Don't raise the humidity that high for a casing, bring it down some. If you had cakes that would be a good humidity levels but you are working with a casing...

Pardon my jarbled wording i am tired...

Do like sixcee says, lower the rH. Should be from 85-92%.

add dry air by fanning or pumping and/or reduce or remove the humidifying medium if any.

In reply to:

You could raise the temp in addition to what the guys above mentioned.

Well I don't know if you have already done this but it is definitly worth a try, cold shock those babies. I heard that some had some casings that were doing nothing at all for so long after they put them in their terrarium, like a week, so he took them out covered them with two layers of tin foil and put them in his fridge for like 12 hours. After that he put them back in his terrarium, RH 87-92% (so says one of those accurites) at 70 degrees (more or less) and within 2 day there was an explosion of pins! Probably got like 50-60 comming to full term

Also it could be some kind of contam, after your done with them, when you throw them out look at what the insides look like, if there is some green or other discoloration on the underside that would explain it.

If you don't have access to a fridge, you might be able to do something with it outside, or by an open window? just make sure that it dosen't freeze!

Hope that helps!
Dave
