Extra substrate?
    #1080269 - 11/23/02 10:42 PM (14 years, 12 days ago)

I mixed 840 ml of fine vermiculite, with 240 ml of brown rice flower. I filled my 6 half pint jars, and there is extra. Is there supposed to be extra? Probably enough for 3 more jars or so. Just wondering if i did something wrong, and the color of the vermiculite is not very white from the brf. If the pf tek for simple minds, his looks very bright, kind of whitish.

That?s probably because it?s colonized.
Just inoculate as usual.
You should be fine. :smirk:

I read that, for PF tek, it's best to prepare the substarte individually for each cake. This method insures that all cakes have the same exact quantities of ingredients.

I have the same exact problems as u describe.. i made enough substate following PF guidelines for 12 jars using 8cups verm... 3cups water.. 3 cups BRF.. and i had alot of stuff left over after filling my jars.. also my jar looks very diffrent too.. im thinking we both used very fine verm and when uc onsider that 8 cups of coarse verm is alot less then 8 cups of fine verm im afraid it might make a differnce

yea, it shouldnt matter, as long as they have enough food to colonize. The spacing between particles of it is just alot differant. Thats all. Hope this works tho

Yeah-why do they make hot dogs in packs of 10, but the buns come in a package of 12???
It's better to have some left over, then to be short.
The brf cakes are grey- the mycelia is white.

I started my first jars last week using the PF and had the same concern when I had close to twice as much substrate as was needed. There was only one shop in town, a nursery actually, and NO ONE else carried verm all by itself. I tried garden centers, walmart, kmart, all the hardware and home improvment places. It was very fine stuff. After 8 days I have good mycilium growth(1.5 inch X 4 inch patches) in all my jars.
