Vermiculite i bought might be wrong
    #1080079 - 11/23/02 07:09 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

I bought some vermiculite from garden store, it is really really fine. Not like a powder, but not very big at all. Is this ok, kinda need to know, trying to do this right now.

Fine verm will work but in my experience it takes a lot longer to colonize. Buy some coarser verm for your substrate mix and use the fine shit for your contam barrier.

If you are doing the PF tek, then the fine stuff is good! I use it and have good results. I have never tried the more coarse stuff b/c the fine ground is all I can get here. But I would not worry about it. The only difference is the fine stiff can hold more water and the more coarse verm make your substarte a little bit more airy and some say it colonizes faster, but for now it should suit your purposes. Have fun, let us know how it goes.

I just had the same problem. I bought some packages of "Whitney Farms" vermic which turned out to be too course. I put in a blender and broke it down into a smaller size. A coffee grinder might also work.

BURN IT IMMEDIATLY! I HATE FINE VERM! your cakes will sink to half the size of the jar after PC'ing at least mine did, and there VERY slow at colonizing.... most likely because theres LITTLE air in the jars so its hard for the mycellium to move around.. just my 2 cents.

Huh? Long colonization times? I'm using fine verm and colonization has been advancing at a very fast rate. Another pro towards using finer verm is the amount of water it can hold. Should work fine. (No pun intended)
