You say your attempting to clone sclorotia bought in amsterdam? I would assume they are using a chemical to prevent growth, like they do on garlic, and other things. I have not heard of any bacteria used to hault growth. What species are you working with? I would just buy the spores and grow them out on rye. Was the sclorotia you bought dryed or fresh?

i heard of them contaminating them with "friendly" bacteria to stop cloning. they want you to buy spores and the stones are cheaper than spores in some cases. i cant remember where i read this but i am sure i did...

You know, I'm sure that the sclerotia were not handled in sterile conditions and packaged in a sterile container.. It's more likely that they just picked up some bacteria from the air or someone's hand.

I find that highly unlikely. Normal handling would place enough bacteria on the surface to make cloning a bit more difficult but I have heard that it can be done. I don't think sclerotia vendors would bother with placing growth inhibiting materials on sclerotia since serious cultivators can purchase tampanesis and mexicana spores/cultures. The extra expense and handling wouldn't be cost effective. Most sclerotia buyers are not interested in cultivation.
